Le softball est une sorte de base-ball pour gens calmes. Très en vogue de nos jours en Amérique du Nord, il est basé sur les mêmes règles que ce dernier. Toutefois la balle est plus volumineuse, et le lanceur doit la jeter par le bas, ce qui rend ce sport moins dur que le base-ball.

Les organismes «Softball Canada» et «Softball Québec» utilisent le terme «softball» tandis que les ligues régionales emploient surtout l'expression «balle molle».

The offensive player located in the batter’s box next to home plate, the batter is responsible for swinging the bat in an attempt to hit the ball.

OBS

Once the hit ball touches the ground in fair territory, the batter becomes a "base runner" or "runner" even if he has not reached the first base. A batter can also become a runner after four pitched balls(a walk), when he is hit by a pitch from the pitcher, when the catcher drops a third strike called by the umpire as the first base is empty, and when the batted ball touches a referee or a runner after having touched a defensive player.

Dès qu'une balle frappée tombe en lieu sûr (à l'intérieur du territoire des bonnes balles), le frappeur devient un «coureur» même avant d'avoir atteint le premier but; s'il est retiré, on le dit néanmoins «frappeur retiré» pour le distinguer d'un coéquipier au premier, deuxième ou troisième but qui sera «coureur retiré». Un frappeur devient également coureur après quatre balles (un but sur balles), lorsqu'il est touché par un lancer du lanceur, lorsque le receveur ne capte pas la troisième prise annoncée par l'arbitre alors que le premier but n'est pas occupé, ou lorsque la balle frappée, après avoir touché un joueur à la défensive, touche un arbitre ou un coureur.

OBS

batteur/batteuse : Terme correct en Europe mais un anglicisme au Canada où il n'est correct que pour désigner le musicien qui joue de la batterie dans un orchestre.

A form of softball for men and women with 10 players on the defensive team : 3 in the field, 3 on the bases, a pitcher, a shortstop, a catcher and a roover who is allowed to move anywhere though he usually plays in the area where the infield and the outfield meet. The game gets its name from the fact that the ball must be thrown 6 feet in the air by the pitcher; any ball so pitched without an attempt to strike it puts the batter out automatically. If pitched less than 6 feet high, it is declared "ball" by the referee; it takes 4 balls for a base on balls. Stolen bases on passed balls or otherwise are not permitted; the ball must be struck before a player on a base is allowed to run. The home plate is 18 inches by 4 feet.

Une variante du softball pour hommes et femmes avec 10 joueurs sur l'équipe défensive : 3 au champ, 3 sur les buts, un lanceur, un arrêt court, un receveur et un «rover» qui peut jouer n'importe où sur le terrain mais qui se cantonne habituellement à la limite des champs intérieur et extérieur. Le jeu tient son nom du fait qu'à chaque lancer, la balle doit monter 6 pieds dans les airs. Un frappeur est automatiquement retiré sur un lancer atteignant cette hauteur et qu'il n'essaie pas de frapper. Tout lancer n'atteignant pas le 6 pieds réglementaire est déclaré «balle» par l'arbitre. Il faut 4 balles pour un but sur balles. Le vol de but n'existe pas : un coureur ne peut voler un but sur une balle passée ni s'éloigner d'un coussin; il doit attendre que la balle soit frappée pour se mettre à courir. Le marbre est de 18 pouces sur 4 pieds.
