In each pitching box is a metal stake 14 inches high angled slightly toward the other stake. The stakes are 40 feet apart, and the area of the pitching box around the stake is composed of soft clay, dirt, or sand.

Le jeu de fers requiert peu d'organisation et peu de matériel. D'abord, le terrain doit mesurer 46' par 6', les poteaux sont placés au centre de la largeur du terrain. On doit compter 40' entre les deux poteaux. On trace ensuite une ligne à 6' de chacune des extrémités. Ces lignes forment la boîte de chacun des joueurs et elle délimite le hors-jeu.

"Jeu de fers" s'emploie pour désigner le terrain où l'on pratique ce jeu et le jeu lui-même.

A game for 2 or 4 players in which each in turn tosses 2 horseshoes underhand to a metal stake 40 feet away (30 feet in women’s play) in an attempt to ring the stake or to come closer to it than one’s opponent.

A side scores one point for each shoe closer to the stake than an opponent’s and 3 points for a ringer - a horseshoe that encircles the stake. Matches are normally played to 50 points in singles games and 21 points in doubles.

A horseshoe or quoit that encircles the stake or hob and is worth 3 points unless it is cancelled out by an opponent’s ringer.

In horseshoe pitching or horseshoes, a ringer is scored when you encircle the stake with the shoe so that a straight edge can touch both tips of the shoe without touching the stake. This counts 3 points. A shoe that lies within 15 centimetres of the stake scores 1 point. A leaner(a shoe that leans against the stake) is also worth 1 point.
