PITOT TUBE ANEMOMETER [3 records]

Record 1 2005-07-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

A pressure-tube anemometer consisting of a pitot tube which is mounted on a wind vane with one end facing into the direction of airflow; the other end is connected to a registering device that measures wind speed.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
DEF

Anémomètre consistant en un tube de Pitot monté sur la pointe face au vent d'une girouette et en un manomètre pour mesurer la pression convertie en unités de vitesse.

Record 2 2005-07-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

Any instrument that measures the wind speed by measuring the pressure exerted by the wind upon the sensor element of that instrument.

OBS

Anemometers may be divided into two classes, (1) those that measure the velocity, (2) those that measure the pressure of the wind, but ... a suitable anemometer of either class will give information about both these quantities. ... Anemometers which measure the pressure may be divided into the plate and tube classes, but the former term must be taken as including a good many miscellaneous forms.

OBS

pressure-type anemometer... Examples include the pressure plate anemometer and the Pitot tube.

OBS

In consulted sources, the term "pressure(-type) anemometer" is sometimes used synonymously with either "pitot-tube anemometer" or "pressure-plate anemometer".

CONT

1667 - Hooke utilise le principe de la variabilité de la pression dynamique du vent pour mesurer la vitesse de ce dernier. Il s'agissait d'un anémomètre à pression.

Record 3 2005-07-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

Instrument in which the excess of pressure and suction associated with the action of the wind on tube openings are combined to operate the float of a manometer.

CONT

[A] pressure-tube anemometer [is] an anemometer which derives wind speed from measurements of dynamic wind pressures. Wind blowing into a tube develops a pressure greater than the static pressure, while wind blowing across a tube develops a pressure less than the static. This pressure differential, which is proportional to the square of the wind speed, is measured by a suitable manometer. [e. g. :] anemo-biagraph, Dines anemometer, Pitot tube.

DEF
