CONT

Decreased or absent breath sounds. Breath sounds may be decreased in intensity without change in fundamental type as the result of several conditions. In some instances the breath sounds may be entirely absent. Fluid, air, or solid in the pleural space, all interfere with the conduction of breath sounds so that they will be decreased or even absent.

OBS

absent breath sounds: term recommended by the Medical Signs and Symptoms Committee.

CONT

A chest tube is a tube inserted into the chest cavity for removal of air or fluid, or both; it is needed when the normally airtight pleural space has been penetrated through surgery or trauma, when a defect in the alveoli allows air to enter the intrapleural space, or when there is an accumulation of fluid, as from pleural effusion. Excessive air or fluid in the pleural space can cause collapse of the lung and the danger of mediastinal shift.

CONT

A chest tube or chest drain is a flexible plastic tube that is inserted through the side of the chest into the pleural space. It is used to remove air(pneumothorax) or fluid(pleural effusion, blood, chyle), or pus(empyema) from the intrathoracic space.

CONT

Chest drain is a conduit to remove air or fluid from the pleural cavity. The fluid can be blood, pus or a pleural effusion. Allows re-expansion of the underlying lung. Must prevent entry of air or drained fluid back into the chest. A chest drain must therefore have three components : An unobstructed chest drain ;A collecting container below chest level ;A one-way mechanism such as water seal or Heimlich valve.

CONT

Chest drains incorporate the use of a one-way valve to drain fluid or air from the pleural cavity. The valve prevents back-flow of air and fluid into the pleural cavity. They are indicated for use when collections of fluid or air are present in the pleural space, and by draining the collection they restore efficient gaseous exchange.

CONT

Chest tubes are inserted to drain blood, fluid, or air and to allow the lungs to fully expand. The tube is placed between the ribs and into the space between the inner lining and the outer lining of the lung(pleural space).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Surgery
DEF

Procedure to place a flexible, hollow drainage tube into the chest in order to remove an abnormal collection of air or fluid from the pleural space.

CONT

A chest tube insertion involves the surgical placement of a hollow, flexible drainage tube into the chest.

OBS

Chest tube insertions are usually performed as an emergency procedure. Chest tubes are used to treat conditions that can cause the lung to collapse, which occurs because blood or air in the pleural space can hamper the ability of a patient to breath. There are four common conditions that can require surgical chest tube insertion, including: pneumothorax (air leak from the lung into the chest); hemothorax (bleeding into the chest); empyema (lung abscess or pus in the chest); pneumothorax or hemothorax after surgery or from trauma to the chest.

OBS

Chest tube thoracostomy is done to drain fluid, blood, or air from the space around the lungs. Some diseases, such as pneumonia and cancer, can cause an excess amount of fluid or blood to build up in the space around the lungs(called a pleural effusion). Also, some severe injuries of the chest wall can cause bleeding around the lungs. Sometimes, the lung can be accidentally punctured allowing air to gather outside the lung, causing its collapse(called a pneumothorax). Chest tube thoracostomy(commonly referred to as "putting in a chest tube") involves placing a hollow plastic tube between the ribs and into the chest to drain fluid or air from around the lungs. The tube is often hooked up to a suction machine to help with drainage. The tube remains in the chest until all or most of the air or fluid has drained out, usually a few days. Occasionally special medicines are given through a chest tube. [...]

OBS

Tube thoracostomy is insertion of a tube into the pleural space. It is used to drain air or fluid from the chest(eg, for large or recurrent effusion refractory to thoracentesis, pneumothorax, complicated parapneumonic effusions, empyema, and hemothorax) and to perform pleurodesis or fibrinolytic adhesiolysis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chirurgie
DEF

DEF

The withdrawal of fluids from a cavity by means of a drain or a wick.

CONT

Drainage of pleural or ascitic fluid should be carried out slowly, at a rate of not more than about 1500 ml per hour, and the total quantity of fluid removed on any single occasion should not exceed about 1500 ml because of the risk of fluid shifts from the vascular to the extravascular compartment, with consequently inadequate ventricular filling pressures.

Methotrexate was also contraindicated by pleural effusion and the risk of delayed excretion of methotrexate causing increased toxicity. The patient chose instead to have a doxycycline pleurodesis. Unfortunately, this procedure was unsuccessful and pleural fluid reaccumulated, causing further shortness of breath.

CONT

Doxycycline pleurodesis for pneumothorax in patients with AIDS. (In Chest, 1994, 105 (3) 823-825, cited in PASCAL data bank.)

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareil respiratoire
CONT
