In recent years, the performance of supercomputers skyrocketed, and at the same time, the access for data scientists to high performance computing technologies has been democratized, offering to policy makers the unprecedented opportunity for creating tailored policy using a completely synthetic population. Policy simulation models can take as input synthetic individuals that resemble the actual ones but are stripped out of their identities, as they are synthetic by design. Synthetic individuals are created by interlinking census data, behavioural surveys and other available data sets and the result is a synthetic population with average statistics similar to the actual one by design, to the point that one is not able to tell if an individual belongs to the real or to the synthetic population, with the advantage of being relieved of most privacy concerns. 3, record 1, English, - synthetic%20person

... channeling is a problem specific to pool sand filters. When the sand(or crushed glass) media captures enough material that changes its physical properties, [the] sand's ability to screen particles out of water is reduced. It creates uneven pressure spots where water is trying to force its way through the media. Eventually, these uneven pressure spots in the filter can form an opening, called a channel. When the channel opens up enough, unfiltered water can flow through it and bypass the majority of the sand.... Cloudy pool water is almost inevitable at that point. 3, record 25, English, - channelled%20filter

Nonlinear models differ from linear ones in a number of ways. Rather than trying to figure out all the chains of causality, the modeler looks for nodes where feedback loops join and tries to capture as many of the important loops as possible in the system's "picture". Rather than shaping the model to make a forecast about future events or to exercise some central control, the nonlinear modeler is content to perturb the model, trying out different variables in order to learn about the system's critical point and its homeostasis(resistance to change). The modeler is not seeking to control the complex system by quantifying it and mastering its causality;(s) he wants to increase her "intuitions" about how the system works so(s) he can interact with it more harmoniously. 1, record 31, English, - nonlinear%20model

[The] step-index multimode fiber has a large core, up to 100 microns in diameter. As a result, some of the light rays that make up the digital pulse may travel a direct route whereas others zigzag as they bounce off the cladding. These alternative pathways cause the different groupings of light rays, referred to as modes, to arrive separately at a receiving point. The pulse, an aggregate of different modes, begins to spread out, losing its well-defined shape. The need to leave spacing between pulses to prevent overlapping limits bandwidth-that is, the amount of information that can be sent. Consequently, this type of fiber is best suited for transmission over short distances, in an endoscope, for instance. 2, record 37, English, - step%2Dindex%20multimode%20fiber

Once again, the environmental groups appearing before the Committee were opposed to the two recommendations, claiming that they were in fact not necessary. The joint CELA/CIELAP submission to the Committee argued that the criticism that MMLERs are not "scientifically based" was simply out of place and did not reflect the nature of how the regulations were developed and administered. The regulations remain technically defensible since they are based on what is technologically feasible, and not what is required from an ecological point of view. In actual fact, the problem is not the existence of poor science, but rather that the MMLERs are not tough enough to protect local ecosystems.(19) The joint brief went on to note that as a general principle, the natural background levels of metals in waters and sediments are not germane to the notion of technology-based standards. 2, record 42, English, - technology%2Dbased%20standard

1, record 42, French, - norme%20fond%C3%A9e%20sur%20la%20technologie

Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes. 2, record 43, English, - mothballing

2, record 50, French, - rayon%20cr%C3%A9pusculaire

Record number: 60, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The confidence interval is the area of uncertainty for the estimating of a parameter. The use of this interval reflects the fact that a study provides one estimate of a parameter, out of the many estimates that would be possible if the study were repeated several times. If an X% CI is constructed for each repetition, X% of the intervals will contain the true value of the parameter. Investigators typically use confidence intervals of 90%, 95% or 99%. Thus, a 95% confidence interval indicates that there is a 95% probability that the confidence interval calculated from a particular study includes the true value of the parameter. If the interval includes a null value(a difference in means of 0, an odds ratio or a relative risk of 1, or a correlation coefficient of 0, for example), the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. A narrow confidence interval around a point estimate indicates a more precise estimate than a wide confidence interval. 3, record 60, English, - confidence%20interval

Record number: 60, Textual support number: 1 OBS
3, record 60, French, - intervalle%20de%20confiance

From this position, the arm and shoulder stretch out as far as they will go, the body inclines forward until it is almost off-balance, and the distance is closed with a rush, preventing the opponent from riposting. 5, record 74, English, - fl%C3%A8che

The Spanish term "cordaje" and the French cognate "cordage" are both collective nouns that denote the set of strings that make up the "stringbed". Another appropriate English equivalent would be "racquet strings"-in the plural. In comparison, the singular term "cuerda" denotes the thin material we call "string" in English. When used in the plural, "cuerdas" and "cordes" are synonomous with "cordaje" and "cordage" respectively. Another point to watch out for : the Spanish term "cordaje" is polysemous. It can denote the process of putting strings on a tennis racquet(=stringing) or it can denote the end product, i. e. the set of strings found on a tennis racquet. Various types of strings used today : multilfilament, multicore(with or without wraps), solid core, textured, unique, construction, hybrid. 3, record 78, English, - strings

An optimal monetary policy would be one that maximizes expected utility. But, recent literature on the analysis of monetary policy in sticky-price DGE [dynamicgeneral equilibrium] models has developed a more direct approach to the formulation of monetary policy objective functions.

Ray effects. An artefact related to the method of discrete ordinates, known as the “ray effect, ” is illustrated … For a two-dimensional case, which is easier to represent, we have considered the problem of a point source in a purely absorbent medium. The arrows represent the directions of the discrete ordinates, and the squares represent the meshing of the spatial discretisation. Because neutrons are obliged to travel along the discrete directions, we note that only the shaded mesh elements will “see” a certain neutron flux, since the others cannot receive any neutrons. The resulting lines are clearly visible on the diagram. In practical cases, the artefact is never so clear, since the sources are spread out and there is scattering, but it can still be identified. The only way to improve this situation is to refine the angular meshing. 1, record 83, English, - ray%20effect

I can’t stress how important it is to get a vet check done on a horse you wish to buy... The vet will issue a written report to you. You can also ask the vet whether the horse will be physically suitable for the discipline that you want to use the horse for... The vet will look at the horse's structure and determine whether his feet and bone structure are suitable for what you wish to do with the horse. He’ll also be able to point out any imperfections. He’ll check the horse's vital signs and check for lameness after being exercised. He’ll check the horse's teeth to see if they correspond to the age the seller claims the horse to be and he’ll also look to see whether the equine's teeth have been maintained. Essentially the vet will check the horse's conformation, movement and soundness, wind, gut sounds, heart and lungs, eyesight and hearing. If anything untoward is apparent then it's a chance for further investigation. 3, record 91, English, - veterinary%20examination
