After grain was placed in the bin, a standard compartmentalized grain probe was used to obtain grain samples along the diameter of the bin at 30-cm intervals, starting at a point 15 cm from the bin wall. The grain probe was 3 m long, with compartments at 14-cm intervals. Samples from each two adjacent compartments in the probe were combined and screened with appropriate sieves to determine the fine material content. The percentages of fine material content in each sample established the distribution of fine material in the bin. 2, record 1, English, - compartmentalized%20grain%20probe

To conduct sample return missions from a wide range of planetary bodies(asteroids, comets, small moons, Moon, Mars, Venus) on a regular basis[, some] factors must be minimized. Rather than looking at sample return as single point missions, each requiring their individual technology development, it would be much more advantageous to examine sample return technologies as threads linking simple missions(both sample return and non-sample return missions) to more complex missions and include them at the onset or early in the development of an exploration strategy. 1, record 2, English, - sample%20return%20mission

7, record 5, French, - titrage

The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station(ISS) ;in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair(submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous(e. g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments : critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. [Text followed by an illustration of a BCAT-3 sample holder. ] 4, record 20, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy (BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization (BCAT-3-SC) and critical point (BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test - 4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT - 3 and 4: Critical Point (BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4:Polydisperse (BCAT-4-Poly). ... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 (BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles (tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes: critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization. 5, record 20, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

flash point : The temperature at which a flash or flame is first observed when a small lighted flame is passed over a sample of a flammable substance in a cup. The flash point is an important test for fire and safety regulations. So also is the fire point, or temperature at which sustained burning first occurs. Constant Volume Sampler(CVS). Motor vehicle exhaust is a complex mixture of unburned fuel, combustion products(including a high water vapor content), and intake air that exits the tail pipe at high temperatures. In simulated driving conditions on the dynamometer, the volume of the exhaust emitted from the tail pipe is continually changing depending on where in the driving cycle the vehicle is(for example, during acceleration, during deceleration, at constant speed, or at idle). To quantitatively determine emission rates from vehicles, we use a constant volume sampling system, which maintains a constant total flow rate of vehicle exhaust plus dilution air. With a CVS system, as exhaust flow increases, such as during heavy acceleration, the dilution air is automatically decreased and the sampling source is representative of exhaust variations. This CVS system provides the source for all exhaust samples collected(regulated and unregulated). Because some compounds present in the exhaust are soluble in water, quantitative transfer requires that the diluted exhaust be maintained above its dew point by providing sufficient dilution air through the CVS. In addition, sampling components, such as the raw exhaust transfer duct and sample lines, must be heated to prevent water condensation. 2, record 26, English, - constant%20volume%20sampling

Point detection refers to testing a sample that has been taken directly from the environment suspected of harboring the target agent. Needs in this regard include not only investigation of suspected sources of contamination but also monitoring the air/water systems in buildings for general pathogen contamination or contamination by specific biological agents. In point detection as in stand-off detection, many situations will demand neither exceptional sensitivity nor exceptional specificity. Assessment of the total microbial content may be sufficient to determine contamination and alert personnel to danger. 1, record 27, English, - point%20detection

Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. A sample of the fuel is then sent to the laboratory for further testing, especially with respect to the flash point. The X-ray diffraction results, in fact, point to a new form of structural disorder called phason disorder, which is unique to quasicrystals. If one compares a Penrose tiling or a quasiperiodic sequence with a conventional crystal, one sees that the quasiperiodic structures have the ability to generate a new form of disorder during growth : a defect can arise when the wrong kind of unit cell, or line segment, falls in a particular place. A few isolated mistakes will not affect the diffraction properties of an entire sample, but if many such mistakes plague a sample, they will disturb the diffraction patterns. 1, record 31, English, - phason%20disorder

1, record 31, French, - d%C3%A9sordre%20de%20phase

A modification of the random search which uses a nonuniform distribution from which the sample points are selected as the search continues. The initial point is chosen by making a guess, and a nonuniform probability density function is centered on this guess. The consequent samples are then chosen from this distribution, and a cluster of measurements is created. The best of this initial set of samples is then used as the center of a new set of measurements where the same kind of distribution but with a small variance is used to generate a cluster of points. This process is repeated until the search specifications are satisfied. Thus, the search "creeps" toward the maximum(or minimum). 1, record 44, English, - creeping%20random%20search%20procedure
