CONT

While the SFCS has a number of features and capabilities designed to vastly improve target identification and hand-off among a number of operators, its core is a muzzle velocity sensor. The system sits on the Picatinny rail of any weapon and draws on a number of acoustic sensors to characterize how the weapon is performing between the time the primer of a round is struck and the bullet leaves the barrel.... Meteorological and other sensor inputs are fed into a ballistics computation that then gives a range azimuth correction to the operator. It helps the operator correct his aim point so that his probability of hit for second, third and fourth rounds is that much more accurate.

Fixed sources that can not or should not be individually distinguished and that collectively form an area source.

CONT

Based on this study, the following recommendations are made: ... Carry out a perimeter study within 2 - 5 km on multiple sources to attempt to separate and quantify specific sources.

CONT

Outside an emitter's property, remote sensing techniques provide integrated burdens of pollutant gas above the sensor by simple interpretation of the measurements made with electro-optical devices. This aids in identification, separation and quantization of emissions of a principal offending polluter from an area or multiple sources. To achieve the same identification with ground level point sampling is difficult.

DEF

CONT

Application au cas des sources multiples. [...]

DEF

A scanner with an oscillating mirror that moves back and forth across the satellite’s direction of travel, creating scan line strips that are contiguous or that overlap slightly.

CONT

One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. The moving mirrors create spatial distortions that must be corrected with preprocessing by the data provider before image data is delivered to the user. An advantage of whiskbroom scanners is that they have fewer sensor detectors to keep calibrated as compared to other types of sensors.

Subject field(s)
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

A sensor designed to keep staring at a particular location while its platform is moving.

CONT

A staring sensor is one that can lock onto a point and compensate for the forward motion of the platform. This mitigates the areal change platform-induced problem, however, other motion problems will become significant. A staring sensor must compensate for pixel change as the platform moves toward or away from the chosen staring point. In this staring geometry, one will have to consider the drift induced by slightly imperfect aiming or imperfect stabilization. In all viewing modes, the stability of the platform is important, as any jitter or vibrations will be transformed into pixel motion on the ground.

Pressure distribution is measured using pressure mapping devices and specialized computer software. By placing a sensor filled mat between the user and the wheelchair seat cushion, a clinician can analyze pressure distribution, contact area, peak pressure and other related characteristics. Pressure maps typically are shown as a graphical display showing pressure, in millimeters of mercury(mmHg), at each sensor point.

Temporal resolution refers to how often the same geographic area is revisited by a sensor. Temporal resolution is governed by the orbital characteristics of the satellite vehicle. A sun-synchronous orbit means that the satellite travels on multiple pole to pole orbits coordinated with the circle of illumination(hemisphere of the Sun's incident light), such that the satellite collects at approximately the same time of day at every point on the Earth for every orbit.

DEF

A viscometer which consists of a spindle rotated in a container of a sample liquid. The principle involved is that the viscosity is directly proportional to the torque required to drive the spindle.

CONT

The principle of the rotation type viscosity measuring element or the rotational spindle type viscosity measuring element is that viscosity of a fluid is directly proportional to the torque produced by the resistance to shearing stress on a spindle rotating in a fluid.

CONT

In the torque viscometer, a sensor(spindle) is rotated at some speed through the same couple arrangement which allows the sensor to be displaced to an equilibrium position at which point the calibrated torque spring gives a reference to the viscosity of the fluid being measured. Different types of spindles and speeds may be used.

CONT

The rotating-vane-type viscosity measuring element depends upon the drag on a rotating member in contact with the material whose viscosity is to be measured. The vane or rotating element is driven by a synchronous electrical motor. The torque required to rotate the member of the vane is measured and is proportional to the viscosity in contact with the rotating element. The synchronous motor drives the cage at a constant speed. The upper spindle arm is coupled to the cage through a calibrated beryllium-copper spring. During measurement, the spring is wound up until its force exactly equals the viscous drag on the spindle; then the cage and spindle continue to operate at the same speed, but with a definite angular relationship to each other proportional to the torque on the spring.

DEF
