Parking is a universal pain point for drivers. People are frustrated and stressed during the search for a vacant parking area, with city drivers spending 30% of their time looking for spaces.... Taking public transportation, such as buses and the metro, can help reduce parking-related congestion and air pollution. Nonetheless, private vehicles are still used for convenience. To reduce carbon emissions, we could replace all fuel-consuming vehicles with electric ones. Congestion would still be caused by the cruising of a vehicle to find a vacant parking space, even if we used electric vehicles. 3, record 5, English, - parking%20congestion

Sign languages are visual/spatial languages, that is, they are designed to be seen, and their grammar is structured in space. Though they are not perfectly equivalent, the signs in a sign language can be regarded as the counterparts of words in an oral language. Each sign consists of a complex movement of the hands and can be described by several parameters : the shape of the hand, the point of articulation, the orientation of the palm, movement, the arrangement of the hands in relation to each other, and rhythm. In linguistic descriptions of sign languages, this movement of the hands is called "manual behaviour. " 1, record 15, English, - manual%20behaviour

The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes. 6, record 19, English, - Zarya%20control%20module

Viewing Distance at Computer Workstations. ... Accommodation is when the lens capsule in your eye changes shape to focus on a close object. The eyes have a default accommodation distance, called the resting point of accommodation (RPA). That is the distance at which the eyes focus when there is nothing to focus on. In total darkness our eyes are set to focus at a particular distance, so that if the lights were turned on, an object at that distance would be in clear focus. The RPA averages 30 inches for younger people and gets farther away with age. 5, record 25, English, - resting%20point%20of%20accommodation

In such an environment, where you can’t see anything, your eyes are actually focusing on a fixed point in space, that is why it is called the "dark" focus. This focus is known as the Resting Point of Accommodation(RPA) and is unique to every individual, but it usually rests more than three feet away from your face(and does not depend on time of day or age). 6, record 25, English, - resting%20point%20of%20accommodation

4, record 45, French, - v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tal%20en%20conteneur

An anti-bird roosting device for protecting an area, comprising at least a pair of cooperating base elements mounted on the area to be protected, and a plurality of projecting spikes, supported on the base elements and projecting away therefrom into a space above the area to be protected. The spikes are provided in a pattern of interspersed combinations of vertical, obtuse and acute angle-forming projections, in a high spike density that prevents roosting in the protected space. Thus, each point in the area to be protected is defended by more than one spike, each spike coming from a different direction, so as to cross-defend each other, creating a perimeter envelope defense of the air volume surrounding the base elements. Each device is easily and inexpensively prepared as a continuous mesh, whose dimensions can be constructed in standard sizes or in accordance with the needs of the user. The element diameter is typically approximately two millimeters. The small element diameter makes the entire device hard to see from a distance so that it does not detract from the building's aesthetics. 1, record 62, English, - anti%2Dbird%20roosting%20device

It is a set of points in an n-dimensional space, often represented as an ellipsoid around a point which is an estimated solution to a problem, although any shape can occur. The confidence region is calculated in such a way that if a set of measurements were repeated many times and a confidence region calculated in the same way on each set of measurements, then a certain percentage of the time, on average,(e. g. 95%) the confidence region would include the point representing the "true" values of the set of variables being estimated. 3, record 64, English, - confidence%20region

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. More precisely, the tangent line to the path at each point is required to be parallel to the vector field at that point. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. Perhaps the most familiar example of a vector field described by field lines is the magnetic field, which is often depicted using field lines emanating from a magnet. 1, record 66, English, - field%20line

The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3 is an Exploration Systems’ transition flight experiment in the Human System Research and Technology area. BCAT-3 provides a unique opportunity to explore fundamental physics and simultaneously develop important future technology, including computers operating on light, complex biomolecular pharmaceuticals, clean sources of geothermal power, and novel rocket engines for interplanetary travel. These studies depend entirely on the microgravity environment provided by the International Space Station(ISS) ;in all other locations accessible to science, gravity dominates and precludes investigation of any other effects of interest. The experiment itself [consists of] photographing samples of colloidal particles with a digital camera onboard the ISS. Colloids are tiny nanoscale spheres of plexiglass a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair(submicron radius) that are suspended in a fluid. They are ubiquitous(e. g., milk, smoke, and paint) and therefore interesting to study directly. Colloids are also small enough that they behave much like atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The 10 samples in BCAT-3 are made from the same ingredients, each a recipe with different proportions, and are grouped into three experiments : critical point, binary alloy, and surface crystallization. BCAT-3 is comprised of three separate experiments, which are individually referred to as a binary alloy(BCAT-3-BA), surface crystallization(BCAT-3-SC) and critical point(BCAT-3-CP). The critical point investigation is continuing with additional samples on future ISS [International Space Station] expeditions and will be referred to as Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-4. BCAT-4 will consist of two sets of samples referred to as BCAT-3 and 4 : Critical Point(BCAT-3-4-CP) and BCAT-4 : Polydisperse(BCAT-4-Poly).... The Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-3(BCAT-3) hardware supported three investigations in which ISS crews photographed samples of colloidal particles(tiny nanoscale spheres suspended in liquid) to document liquid/gas phase changes, growth of binary crystals, and the formation of colloidal crystals confined to a surface. Colloids are small enough that in a microgravity environment without sedimentation and convection, they behave much as atoms and so can be used to model all sorts of phenomena because their size, shape, and interactions can be controlled. The BCAT-3 payload consists of ten small samples of colloid alloys in which the microscopic colloid particles are mixed together into a liquid. These ten samples are contained within a small case that is the size of a school textbook. At the start of an experiment run, all ten samples are shaken to completely remix the colloid samples, much in the same way that salad dressing must be shaken to remix oil and vinegar. After the samples are mixed, what remains is periodically photographed using a digital camera until the colloid and liquid components of those samples have separated or the polymers have formed crystals. The samples can be remixed to repeat the experiment. The ten samples in BCAT-3 were selected as part of three separate experiments examining different physical processes : critical point, binary alloys, and surface crystallization. 5, record 68, English, - binary%20alloy%20colloidal%20test

The Two Frame Gyroscope. When the rotor is spinning and the spin axis is in a horizontal plane a definite resistance will be felt owing to gyroscope inertia, at the same time the spin axis will begin to precess in a vertical plane and will continue to do so with sufficient power to lift light weights until all the gyroscopic inertia disappears due to the rotor slowing and stopping. The Three Frame Gyroscope. If the base of a three framed gyroscope is held in the hand with the rotor spinning and turned about any of the three axes, the rotor will continue to point in the original direction in space. This property is known as gyroscope inertia. 2, record 71, English, - three%2Dframe%20gyroscope

2, record 71, French, - gyroscope%20%C3%A0%20trois%20cadres

Horizon sensors [are] the primary means for directly determining the attitude of a spacecraft relative to the Earth... The attitude of spacecraft relative to Earth is one of the most important aspects of attitude determination and control, particularly for communications(TDRSS), weather(GOES), Earth resources(LANDSAT), satellites, etc. Earth cannot be treated as a point source like the Sun, especially for near Earth satellites for which Earth covers about 40% of the sky. Therefore, merely detecting the Earth is by no means sufficient for attitude determination, even for the most crude attitude determination requirements. Hence most sensors are designed to detect the Earth's horizon. Horizon sensors are infrared devices that detect the contrast of the cold of space and the warmth of the Earth(or other body). 5, record 73, English, - horizon%20sensor

The local orbital reference system is defined at each point of the orbit by three unit vectors. These vectors are derived from the satellite position and velocity vectors: Vector L is colinear with position vector P (on the axis between the Earth’s centre and the satellite). It defines the yaw axis. Vector T is perpendicular to the orbital plane (vector L, vector V). It defines the pitch axis. Vector R completes the set of orthogonal axes. It lies in the plane defined by Vectors L and V and defines the roll axis. Spacecraft axes. The three orthogonal axes of rotation : roll, pitch and yaw. If the spacecraft has a recognisable longitudinal axis or a specified forward direction of flight, the axes are analogous to those of an aircraft, where the roll axis is the longitudinal axis; the pitch axis is in the plane of the wings; and the yaw axis is the "vertical" axis, orthogonal to both the roll and pitch axes. The axes are mutually perpendicular, with an "origin" at the vehicle's centre of mass. For a winged spacecraft such as a Space Shuttle, the similarity with an aircraft is obvious. For expendable launch vehicles the roll axis is the axis which is vertical at launch and the other axes are more-or-less arbitrarily assigned since the vehicle rotates about the roll axis in flight.... The axes of a cylindrical spacecraft(e. g. Apollo, Suyuz, etc.) are similar to those of an ELV [Expendable Launch Vehicle] at launch, but one orbit assume the axis-definition of an aircraft(i. e. defined relative to the pilot's seat). The axes of a satellite mirror those of an aircraft "flying along the orbital arc" : the roll axis is aligned with the direction of travel; the yaw axis passes through the sub-satellite point; and the pitch axis is orthogonal to the other two. For a satellite in an equatorial orbit, the pitch axis is aligned approximately with the Earth's spin axis. The pitch axis is also the spin axis for the spin-stabilised satellite. 3, record 74, English, - pitch%20axis

This leads to the definition of the box-shaped satellite’s faces as follows: the "plus-x face" faces east; the "minus-x face" faces west; +y faces south; -y faces north; +z is the Earth-pointing face; and -z is the "anti-Earth face." 3, record 74, English, - pitch%20axis

For launches to interplanetary trajectories, the time of launch is constrained by the relative positions of the planets, at the time of both launch and encounter(i. e. the spacecraft must be aimed at a point in space that the planet will have reached by the time of encounter). Notch width is not the same as carapace width. Notch width is the distance across the carapace as measured from the notch just anterior to the 10th antero-lateral spine to the same notch on the other side. Carapace width includes the length of the spines and is measured from spine tip to spine tip across the widest portion of the shell. Notch width is the preferred measurement for scientific work because the spines tend to wear off as the shell ages. The same wear does not occur to the notch so notch width remains constant until the crab moults again. -- Ivan Winther, DFO Science - Pacific Region. 3, record 84, English, - notch%20width

The modern world is full of large data sets : census data, multimedia databases, and remote sensing data, to name a few. With the aid of computers it is possible to collect scientific data on a grand scale. These examples are not "large" merely because they have many data points. They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. The micro-WIS(Micro Wireless Instrumentation System) consists of tiny autonomous sensors for data acquisition... This HTD [Head-of-Train Telemetry Device] is designed to demonstrate the micro-WIS transmitter and recorder. One of the objectives of this HTD is to obtain meaningful real-time measurements for use in the orbiter's Environmental Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) operations. The micro-WIS transmitter's simultaneous real-time measurements of air cabin temperatures in many interior compartments of the orbiter will help ECLSS operations personnel address issues encountered on STS-88 and early International Space Station flights. Currently, only one temperature reading in the aft flight deck of the orbiter is available for adjusting model predictions for real-time environments. Micro-WIS will also reduce the time it takes the crew to obtain on-orbit temperature measurements and will increase the capability to monitor temperatures over long periods.... Micro-WIS data will also be used to validate cabin air temperature models that are used to make critical predictions of the dew point on early ISS [International Space Station] missions, which is important because orbiter cabin air exerts a significant influence on the entire station volume. Although the physical configuration of the air ducts in the orbiter cabin has been changed significantly, the sensors have remained the same and some temperature data has never been available. 3, record 90, English, - micro%2Dwireless%20instrumentation%20system

The Clinostat has been used by biologists for over a hundred years to study how organisms might adapt to the microgravity environment and what effects the force of gravity has on plant and animal development and behavior. The clinostat is a simple device which places a plant, a small organism, or cell growing in culture on a rotating platform. The rotation causes the biosystem under test to be subjected to the gravity vector from "all" directions. From the system's point of view, the rotation cancels the gravity vector by continuous averaging thus approximating the highly reduced vector found in the actual space environment. 3, record 93, English, - clinostat

Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. The greater stability is provided by the immobile arm, which is first commanded to anchor Dextre to an ISS [International Space Station] stabilization point. At the tip of each arm, we find a "hand", known technically as the Orbital Replacement Unit/Tool Changeout Mechanism(OTCM). The OTCM consists of a set of parallel retractable jaws, which serve to grip payloads and tools. Each OTCM is also equipped with a retractable motorized socket wrench to mate and demate mechanisms on-orbit, as well as lights and a black and white camera. Dextre lower body is equipped with a pair of pan/tilt colour cameras that allow astronauts aboard the ISS, and engineers on the ground, to monitor the task, which is out of direct eyesight. 1, record 97, English, - orbital%20replacement%20unit%2Ftool%20changeout%20mechanism

One current proteomic tool for visualizing and quantitating all proteins expressed in a ological system at a given time is two-dimensional gel electrophoresis(2-DGE). As originally described by Patrick O’Farrell for analyzing Escherichia coli proteins in 1975, 2-DGE combines the electrophoretic separation of denatured proteins bysoelectric point charge differences in the first dimension with separation based on molecular size differences in the second dimension. The proteins, which can be detected using protein-specific stains, appear as constellations of spots in the 2-D space of the gel. Over the 20-year history of 2-DGE, numerous algorithms have been developed for comparing 2-DGE patterns and quantitatively analyzing protein abundance. 2, record 99, English, - two%2Ddimensional%20gel%20electrophoresis
