An electrically conducting or semi-conducting nanofibre. 6, record 7, English, - nanowire
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Two processes in nanotechnology by which nanowires can be manufactured are suspension and deposition. A suspended nanowire is held up by the ends in an evacuated chamber, and then is chemically etched or bombarded with high-speed atoms or molecules to reduce its diameter. Another method involves indenting the surface of a wire in the center of a suspended span, raising the temperature, and then stretching the wire while it is near its melting point. A deposited nanowire is fabricated on a surface consisting of some non-conducting substance such as plastic or glass. The process is similar to that by which semiconductor chips are grown, except that the result is a linear(one-dimensional) structure rather than a flat(two-dimensional) or solid(three-dimensional) structure. 7, record 7, English, - nanowire
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
A nanometer-scale wire [is] made of metal atoms, silicon, or other materials that conduct electricity. Nanowires are built atom by atom on a solid surface, often as part of a microfluidic device. They can be coated with molecules such as antibodies that will bind to proteins and other substances of interest to researchers and clinicians. By the very nature of their nanoscale size, nanowires are incredibly sensitive to such binding events and respond by altering the electrical current flowing through them, and thus can form the basis of ultra sensitive molecular detectors. 2, record 7, English, - nanowire

The temperature at which [the] crystals [of a pure substance] are in equilibrium with the liquid phase at atmospheric pressure. 6, record 11, English, - melting%20point
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The melting point of a substance should be considered a property of its crystalline form only. At the melting point the liquid and solid forms of a substance exist in equilibrium. All substances of crystalline nature have their characteristic melting points. For very pure substances the temperature range over which the process of fusion occurs is very small. The melting point of a pure crystalline solid is a function of pressure; it increases with increasing pressure for most substances. However, in the case of ice(and a few other substances) the melting point decreases with increasing pressure... Under a pressure of one standard atmosphere, the melting point of pure ice is the same as the ice point, that is, 0°C. 7, record 11, English, - melting%20point
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 OBS

The term "melting point" (mp) is used when the equilibrium temperature is approached by heating the solid. Ordinarily refers to temperature above 0°C, the melting point of ice. 6, record 11, English, - melting%20point

It is important to make a distinction between the vapor pressure of a liquid ... and the pressure of a vapor. The vapor pressure of a pure liquid is a unique and characteristic property of the liquid and depends only upon the temperature. A gas or vapor may, on the other hand, exert any pressure within reason, depending upon the volume to which it is confined, provided it is not in contact with its liquid phase. 9, record 18, English, - vapor%20pressure

Castor is a secretion found in both sexes of the beaver, and it accumulates in two pear-shaped bags on the abdomen of the animal. The sacs are about the length of a finger, and at the thickest point are about the diameter of the thumb. They contain a greasy mass of yellowish-brown, reddish or blackish viscous substance.("A Subtle Something" by Charles J. McGuirk Saturday Evening Post. Dec. 4, 1926). 1, record 28, English, - castor

When a protein solution is thoroughly dialyzed against distilled H2O to remove all small ions other than -H[superscript+] and OH-, the pH of the resulting solution is known as the isoionic pH. 3, record 31, French, - pH%20isoionique
