The term PLAR(private line automatic ringdown) was used to distinguish this service from its predecessor service PLMR(private line manual ringdown) back in the days of the crank operated telephone.... In PLAR operation, two telephones are dedicated for point-to-point voice communication. When both phones are idle, "on-hook", all is quiet. When a phone at one end is picked up, "off-hook", the phone at the other end would instantly ring to alert the other end to pick up. Waiting for [a] dial tone and dialing a number are not needed, thus saving valuable time. When both phones are off-hook, ringing stops and voice communication is established.

Since the term "hub" tends to be overused in commercial aviation by airlines eager to promote their services in a highly competitive market, confusion may reign when this term is improperly used as a synonym for "gateway." Before the "hub-and-spoke" system was conceived by airline economists, the term "gateway" was the only term used to signify a destination from which travel itineraries could either start or end. Strictly speaking, a gateway is a large city with a major airport servicing many international centres. Chain dimensioning also known as point-to-point dimensioning, is a method of dimensioning from one feature to the next. Each dimension is dependent upon the previous dimension or dimensions. This is a common practice, although caution should be used as the tolerance of each dimension builds on the next, which is known as tolerance buildup, or stacking.

Two plans of dimensioning are used on mechanical drawings.... One is called point-to-point or chain dimensioning; each length is dimensioned from the end of the preceding one. These dimensions are usually taken directly from the designer's sketch; however tolerances are cumulative and, rather than averaging out, usually add or subtract so that intermediate clearances may be disturbed. In the other plan, called datum dimensioning..., all dimension lines in each direction extend from a datum or reference line or plane which is usually the first machined surface.
