The distillation of coal for the production of gas, coke and the tarry materials used for the manufacture of dyes and organic chemicals results in a watery waste known as ammoniacal gas liquor, and the disposal of this is a cause of pollution. Ammoniacal gas liquor contains free ammonia, ammonium salts, cyanide, sulphide, thiocyanate, and a variety of aromatic compounds including pyridine, phenols, cresols and xylenols.... Gas liquor, discharged untreated to a stream, has an extremely high oxygen demand, many times greater than that of sewage. 1, record 2, English, - ammoniacal%20gas%20liquor

The composition of air is variable with respect to several of its components(e. g., CH4, CO2, H2O) so "pure" air has no precise meaning; it is commonly considered to be air which is free of dust, [hydrometeors, ] aerosols, and reactive gaseous contaminants of anthropogenic origin [such as industrial effluents].... Relative clean air which is free of most reactive anthropogenic pollution(NO, NO2, SO2, non-methane hydrocarbons, etc.), often used as a reference sample in the calibration and operation of instruments, is purchased under the designation of zero air. 4, record 3, English, - pure%20air

To improve public access to information on the environment and thus contribute in the long term to the prevention and reduction of pollution, the European Union(EU) is setting up a European pollutant release and transfer register(PRTR). Regulation(EC) sets up a Pollutant Release and Transfer Register(PRTR) at European Union(EU) level in the form of a publicly accessible electronic database. This database will meet the requirements of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe(UN-ECE) Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers, signed by the Community in May 2003. The public will be able to access this register free of charge on the internet and will be able to find information using various search criteria(type of pollutant, geographical location, affected environment, source facility, etc.). 1, record 4, English, - European%20Pollutant%20Release%20and%20Transfer%20Register

Efforts to enhance marine security must be balanced with the need to maintain the free flow of trade and people, which in turn maintains the competitiveness of Canada's marine sector and our economic vitality. Enhancing security has many benefits, especially in combating organized crime, enhancing search and rescue capabilities, conserving our fisheries and combating marine pollution. Perhaps most importantly, it also improves the ability to prevent terrorists or terrorist devices from entering Canada or accessing our marine transportation system. 2, record 6, English, - marine%20security

1, record 6, French, - s%C3%BBret%C3%A9%20maritime

In North America, acid rain is a national as well as an international problem. Within the United States, pollutees are given an entitlement to be free from pollution above the limits set under the United States Clean Air Act. Canadian victims are entitled to much less. But, in both states, environmental legislation is focused on short-range air pollution since the legislation was drafted at a time when one was not aware, yet, of the detrimental effects of long-range air pollution. Therefore, the victims of long-range pollution are not adequately protected within both states. 2, record 9, English, - long%2Drange%20air%20pollution
