[Environment and Climate Change Canada issues] Air Quality Warnings when air pollution is expected to rise or is already high. This can happen because of wildfire smoke, urban pollutants, or industrial activity, which can increase harmful substances in the air like fine particles(PM2. 5), ozone, or nitrogen dioxide.... The air quality health index or "AQHI" is a scale designed to help you understand what the air quality around you means to your health.... The AQHI communicates four primary things : 1. A number from 1 and 10+ indicating the quality of the air. The higher the number, the greater the health risk associated with the air quality. When the amount of air pollution is very high, the number will be reported as 10+. 2. A category that describes the level of health risk associated with the index reading(e. g. Low, Moderate, High, or Very High Health Risk). 3. Health messages customized to each category for both the general population and the ’at risk’ population. 4. Current hourly AQHI readings and maximum forecasted values for today, tonight and tomorrow. 3, record 2, English, - air%20quality%20health%20index

... the term "state of technology"(a standard term used in licences) is a dynamic concept and both the availability and the economic feasibility of the technology become issues. Dr. Rainer HAMM(Rechtsanwalt)(defence attorney) commented that there is a sensitive major tax on waste water. Those who have a licence to use a river to pollute have to pay a fee depending on the degree of pollution. The waste water effluent fees are quite effective to minimize pollution.... Large corporations also have high incentive to develop technology. It is they who develop technology. While universities can and do develop standards, they cannot build technology and compare standards. That can only be done by industry itself. Thus it is the industry which makes the law by defining the standards of technology. They are motivated to do so by the new device, popular in the United States, known as "technology forcing. "Dr. HAMM was however sceptical of using criminal law to pursue dynamic concepts. If you include a state of technology that can change any time and then punish someone for not having fulfilled the state of technology, then you blur the distinction between what is criminal and what is not criminal. 2, record 11, English, - technology%20forcing

Canada is working through many international organizations and instruments to strengthen measures to protect the marine environment, including global fish stocks. In particular, the 1995 United Nations Agreement on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks(commonly called the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, or UNFA) provides the framework for the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks in high seas areas regulated by RFMOs. It carries an obligation to apply the precautionary approach and ecosystem-based management, as well as to minimize pollution, waste and discards of fish. 1, record 13, English, - United%20Nations%20Agreement%20on%20Straddling%20and%20Highly%20Migratory%20Fish%20Stocks

Achievements in doctor blade technology have resulted in high quality flexographic printing and pollution prevention through controlled ink transfer from the ink container to the substrate. The average two-roll system with its ink fountain, fountain roller and anilox roll is a veritable open reservoir, exposing large quantities of solvents that are readily evaporated. The chambered doctor blade halts this evaporation. Ink enters the chamber from the reservoir or ink sump by a pump. The ink is held in the manifold area, with a small area exposed to the anilox roll. A doctor blade is positioned to shear off the excess ink as the anilox turns, returning all extra ink to the chamber. A second plastic or metal blade retains the ink within the chamber. The chamber is sealed off completely so that no ink goes beyond the width of the unit. 3, record 14, English, - chambered%20doctor%20blade

"High Volume Air Sampler" : A filtering device for particulate collection, used by the National Air Pollution Control Administration to determine the concentrations of suspended particulates in American urban and rural areas. A glass-fiber medium is used which can filter at the rate of 70 cubic feet per minute. The filter is over 99 percent efficient for the collection of particles as fine as 0. 3 um [micrometers] in diameter. High Volume Air Samplers generally run as long as 24 hours without an appreciable increase in airflow resistance. 1, record 27, English, - high%20volume%20air%20sampler

To prevent pollution of the public water supply, the disposal of spent sulfite liquor into rivers is, in many cases, forbidden. The only solution possible is to evaporate it or even to dry it out completely.... The back-pressure process is notable for its great heat economy, but it makes necessary the profitable utilization of the back-pressure steam.... Because of the high temperatures during the evaporation process, thermal decomposition of the liquor may occur.... The thermal compression method is especially advantageous when cheap power is available. The steam formed during the evaporation is compressed and passed along the outer wall of the evaporator where it is condensed and its latent heat transferred to the boiling liquor. 1, record 28, English, - back%2Dpressure%20process

The monitoring of particulates with High Volume(Hi-Vol) samplers and other filter media varies from a simple colorimetric measure of the coefficient of haze(CoH) to the use of neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, etc. for metal concentrations and gas chromatography for organic composition.
