Prácticamente no existe una energía limpia 100 %. La alteraciones que pueda provocar una energía limpia -considerando su ciclo de vida-, no son relevantes como para alterar ecosistemas, ciclos hidrológicos, o generar residuos que la naturaleza no pueda asimilar previamente tratados. Con esta definición quedan excluídas por ejemplo, las grandes represas y la energía nuclear. Las energías limpias, son renovables y compatibles con sociedades sustentables.
