Il arrive que le carcinome embryonnaire, la tumeur vitelline et le tératome soient parsemés de structures reproduisant, de façon très fidèle ou quelque peu caricaturale, un bouton embryonnaire ou l'un des premiers stades de segmentation d'un œuf humain fécondé. Lorsque ces formes embryoïdes sont abondantes au point de devenir prédominantes, on parle de polyembryome.
