The plastic base of videotape.

CONT

The tape backing, consisting of 0, 001" thick Mylar or acetate, is coated with 0, 004" of a gamma ferric oxide suspended in a binder. Several materials have been used as a backing material for the oxide. Cellophane, paper and PVC were used with varying success but have now been superseded by Mylar(Terylene), polyester and cellulose acetate.

Thermal blanketing is used to keep satellite cooler or warmer, depending on what is needed. It acts like the insulation in your house : when it's hot outside, insulation keeps cool inside and when it's cold outside, insulation keeps warm air inside. Mylar [is] a very good material for thermal blanketing. Mylar is the trademark name for a polyester film plastic discovered and manufactured by the company DuPont. Mylar has many uses, including insulation, backing for magnet tape, balloons, and as a polyester film used to cover a metallic yarn. Mylar is also used for insulation in space suits. It is moderately expensive, and moderately durable.

Some are designated "standard", as applied to acetate base; some are designated "low noise", having a high signal-to-noise ratio and a wide dynamic frequency range, applied to a polyester base; and some are designated "low print-through", with an absolute minimum of layer-to-layer signal transfer, applied to a polyester base.

New resin binders make possible the production of low-print tape with an output comparable to the best general-purpose tapes. With conventional binders low print-through can only be achieved by sacrificing output.

S'y ajoute une couche magnétique composée de particules d'oxyde ferrique microscopiques, épaisseur 10 microns.
