DEF

A branched polyethylene polymer, partially crystalline, that melts at about 115°C and has a density of 0.91 - 0.94 cm-3.

OBS

The branches can be as long as the main chain or as short as one to four carbon atoms, but most of the short branches consist of ethyl and n-butyl groups.

CONT

Low Density Polyethylene. This was the first powders to be used for coating purposes. It is only available in grades for the fluidised bed process. LD polyethylene provides an economic thick coating with fair chemical resistance and good electrical insulation properties.

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Plastic Materials
OBS

Essentially a linear polymer; it is highly crystalline, melts at about 135°C, and has a density of 0. 95-0. 97 g cm-3. Linear polyethylene has greater tensile strength and hardness than the low density variety. It is frequently prepared via Ziegler-Natta catalysis.

CONT

CONT

The [polyethylene] pipe is manufactured in three types, namely(LD) low density,(MD) medium density and(HD) high density.... The high density pipe is a much more rigid type than the LD or MD and the manufacturers recommend it as being suitable for DWV installations.

CONT

Recently a third group of polyethylenes, called Linear Low Density Polyethylene(LLDPE) appeared on the market, also made by a low pressure process. LLDPE is manufactured by co-polymerizing ethylene with a small amount of alpha-olefins... which lowers the density by forming short chain side branches on the linear polymer chain.

OBS

Three main groups of polyethylene can be distinguished, namely : LPDE low density polyethylene... ;LLPDE linear low density polyethylene... ;HDPE high density polyethylene....

CONT

Geomembranes are manufactured from synthetic(thermoplastic) or bituminous products. Synthetic materials, mostly used in the Netherlands, are high density polyethylene..., low density polyethylene..., polyvinylchloride..., ethylene copolymer bitumen(ECB), and chlorinated polyethylene...

CONT

Ethylenecopolymer bitumen (ECB). ECB membranes have been developed basically for the roofing industry but are also applied in civil engineering as sealing materials. The raw materials used for ECB are ethylene and bytyl acrylate, together forming 50 to 60%, and a special bitumen, 40 to 50%. These materials are mixed in an extrusion process at a temperature of about 160 °C. The bitumen gives the material a thermoplastic character and also acts as a softener and a light stabilizer.
