A polymer or blend of polymers that does not require vulcanization on crosslinking during processing, yet has properties, at its service temperature, similar to those of vulcanized rubber; these properties disappear at processing temperature, so that further processing is possible, but return when the material is returned to its service temperature.

Il y a lieu de mettre à part une classe d'élastomères qui se caractérise non pas par des propriétés chimiques les destinant à des usages spéciaux, mais par le fait qu'ils peuvent être utilisés sans avoir été vulcanisés et, en conséquence, être mis en œuvre comme des plastiques : celle des élastomères thermoplastiques. Les premiers, mis sur le marché au cours des années 1960, sont des copolymères, dits copolymères-blocs, constitués en principe de trois longues séquences : une séquence centrale élastomérique (polybutadiène ou polyisoprène) d'assez grande longueur et deux séquences terminales non élastomériques (polystyrène) plus courtes.
