Assays of biochemical systems are carried out on a large scale in both industry and academia, so it is desirable to have an apparatus that allows these assays to be performed in a convenient and inexpensive fashion. Because they are relatively easy to handle and low in cost, microplates are often used for such studies. Microplates typically consist of a plurality of individual wells formed of polymeric materials. Each well includes sidewalls and a bottom so that an aliquot of a sample may be placed within each well. The wells may be arranged in relatively close proximity in a matrix pattern, allowing samples to be studied individually or as a group. Common sizes for microplates include matrices having dimensions of 4x6(24 wells) or 8x12(96 wells), although larger microplates are also used that may include matrices of hundreds or even thousands of wells. 9, record 2, English, - microplate

Geomembrane : The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because :(i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive;(ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners;(iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and(iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 42, English, - geomembrane

Also known as geofabrics, filter cloths, support fabrics, or civil engineering fabrics, geotextiles are membranes used to stabilize soils. For that purpose, permeable fabrics made of synthetic fibers with high tensile strength, even when wet, large modulus of elasticity, high ductility, and negligible creep when under load are usually used. ... These fabrics may be woven or nonwoven. Made of such synthetics as polypropylene, the nonwoven fabrics are needle-punched for permeability to water. 2, record 43, English, - geotextile

Advantages of the lattice entrapment method for immobilizing an enzyme include its overall experimental simplicity, the need for only small amounts of an enzyme in order to produce a water-insoluble enzyme conjugate and the fact that it is a physical method.... Disadvantages of the method also exist.... The exact physical nature of the crosslinked polymers is often quite important for obtaining high activity.... 3, record 48, French, - inclusion%20dans%20une%20matrice

The first experiments on covalent binding of a variety of proteins including enzymes as well as antigens to chemically well defined water-insoluble polymeric supports were limited to the commercial polymers available at the time--derivatized celluloses and styrene polymers.... These first steps were soon followed by other methods of coupling proteins to polymers.... The preparation of a complementary polymeric support is based on modifying the enzyme by an analogue of the monomer and then copolymerizing the resulting preparation with the monomer. This gives an enzyme chemically incorporated into the three-dimensional lattice of the polymer gel, the points of the enzyme-support binding being the centers of premodification of the enzyme molecule. 2, record 56, English, - polymeric%20support

The film-forming polymer product is the key ingredient in determining the seawater erosion behavior of self-polishing marine antifouling paints. Self-polishing behavior of the paints is achieved through the erosion process of the polymeric binder, enabling the release of incorporated biocides at a constant rate. Block copolymers are organic polymers that are made up of two or more different monomer types, which are segregated into groups or blocks. When two mono-polymers are physically mixed together they will have a tendency to phase separate on a macroscopic scale. This is caused by the molecules’ drive toward the lowest possible interaction energy, which occurs when the individual polymer molecules are coagulated with other molecules of the same polymeric makeup. 3, record 83, English, - homopolymer

1, record 93, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20g%C3%A9otechnique

In these electrodes a support, containing an ionic(either cationic or anionic) species or an uncharged species, forms the ion-selective membrane which is usually interposed between two aqueous solutions. The support can either be porous(e. g. Millipore filter, glass frit, etc.) or non-porous(e. g. glass or inert polymeric material such as PVC, yielding with the ion-exchanger and the solvent a "solidified" homogeneous mixture). Unplasticized PVC presents some processing difficulties due to its high melt viscosity; in addition, the finished product is too brittle for some applications. To overcome these problems and to produce toughening, certain polymeric additives are usually added to the PVC. These materials, known as impact modifiers, are generally semicompatible and often somewhat rubbery in nature. Among the most important impact modifiers in use today are butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers(nitrile rubber), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) graft terpolymers, methacrylate-butadiene-styrene(MBS) terpolymers, chlorinated polyethylene, and some polyacrylates. 4, record 96, English, - impact%20modifier
