As the name suggests, TPUs are thermoplastic resins.... Most TPUs on the market today are synthesized using at least three different types of monomers : a polymeric compound containing a Tschugaeff-Zerewitinoff hydrogen, a diisocyanate, and a chain extender.

Les chaînes polymères sont faites de la répétition linéaire d'une séquence chimique particulière, le «monomère». L'aspect dans l'espace d'une très longue chaîne est celui d'un fil très enchevêtré. Une première approximation géométrique de cette courbe est le mouvement brownien : en effet, sur quelques séquences chimiques, les corrélations d'orientation entre monomères sont effacées et la chaîne polymère apparaît comme faite de pas indépendants. Dans la limite d'une grande chaîne, cette décorrélation donne un mouvement brownien qui se présente comme une courbe erratique avec de nombreux retours en arrière.
