The sol-gel process generally involves the use of metal alkoxides, which undergo hydrolysis and condensation polymerization reactions to give gels. The production of glasses by the sol-gel method permits preparation of glasses at far lower temperatures than is possible by using conventional melting. Méthode sol-gel. Pour produire un guide optique ou un verre massif, différents procédés peuvent être utilisés. Parmi ces techniques, le procédé sol-gel est sans doute le plus simple et le moins onéreux. La méthode est basée sur l'utilisation d'un sol obtenu à partir de précurseurs d'alkoxydes métalliques ou organométalliques. Le procédé de polymérisation par plasma froid (plasma à décharges lumineuses) offre la possibilité de greffer un polymère conducteur (Ppy) à la surface d'un tissu synthétique afin d'obtenir une prothèse à surface conductrice. Les conditions de déposition peuvent être optimisées de façon à ce que le dépôt soit greffé physiquement au polymère de support (microfibre) et la réticulation suffisante pour rendre le dépôt très tenace et insoluble.

[...] la polymérisation par plasma a le principal avantage d'être une technique de déposition rapide, propre (aucun solvant organique n'est nécessaire et les quantités de réactifs utilisés sont très faibles) et sans effet sur les propriétés volumiques du polymère. Cette technique peut-être utilisée dans le traitement de surface des biomatériaux à plusieurs fins: former un film barrière, fournir des sites réactifs et modifier les interactions des protéines et des cellules. L'adhésion des cellules et des protéines peut aussi être améliorée avec la déposition d'un polymère par polymérisation par plasma. Cette technique offre donc à la fois l'opportunité de déposer un polymère conducteur à la surface des fibres d'un tissu et aussi celle d'améliorer simultanément les caractéristiques de mouillage «in situ».
