An instrument used to measure the intensity and the wavelength distribution of the light emitted as fluorescence from a molecule excited at a specific wavelength or wavelengths within the absorption band of a particular compound.

OBS

Characteristic fluorescence bands may be used to identify specific pollutants such as the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Excitation spectra of impurities can be observed by scanning the wavelength of the excitation light which is incident on the sample over a range of wavelengths and observing the relative intensity of the fluorescence emitted at a given wavelength. These spectra are also characteristic of the impurity.

Les biomoniteurs sont des plantes dont on relève la présence (abondance) ou l'absence au sein des communautés végétales naturelles ou cultivées. Comme l'explique J.P. Garrec, «Ces plantes font l'objet d'identification, de comptages et d'études statistiques. L'étude diachronique est la méthode de biomonitoring la plus utilisée. Elle consiste à mesurer, sur un périmètre donné, l'évolution de la végétation au cours du temps. Il suffit, pour cela, de comparer les relevés floristiques effectués à différentes périodes de façon à détecter les changements de flore (composition spécifique, abondance) provoqués par la présence éventuelle d'éléments polluants». L'étude de la répartition des lichens est un fameux exemple de biomonitoring, utilisé notamment pour cartographier la pollution due au dioxyde de soufre autour des grandes agglomérations.

A form of squamous cell carcinoma affecting mule spinners in the cotton-spinning industry, due to continued soaking of the clothes and abdomen by arsenic, tar, and carcinogenic oils; it is now rare.

In addition to chimney sweeps and coal tar workers, scrotal cancer has been observed in workers exposed to mineral oils in the processing of cotton(cotton mule spinners).... Hoffman concluded that the incidence of scrotal cancer in cotton mule spinners was due to a combination of exposure to PAHs [polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons] present in the lubrication oils and chronic chemical and mechanical irritation from the trousers.
