Les biomoniteurs sont des plantes dont on relève la présence (abondance) ou l'absence au sein des communautés végétales naturelles ou cultivées. Comme l'explique J.P. Garrec, «Ces plantes font l'objet d'identification, de comptages et d'études statistiques. L'étude diachronique est la méthode de biomonitoring la plus utilisée. Elle consiste à mesurer, sur un périmètre donné, l'évolution de la végétation au cours du temps. Il suffit, pour cela, de comparer les relevés floristiques effectués à différentes périodes de façon à détecter les changements de flore (composition spécifique, abondance) provoqués par la présence éventuelle d'éléments polluants».
