Les termites sont généralement considérés comme des mangeurs de bois. Mais, si cette conception est le plus souvent vraie, les Isoptères ne sont pas tous exclusivement xylophages; il existe parmi eux de véritables polyphages comme le Mastotermes darwiniensis, fléau de l'Australie septentrionale, qui consomme non seulement tout ce qui contient de la cellulose (bois, toile, coton, etc.) mais aussi la laine, la corne, l'ivoire, le sucre, etc. Cette polyphagie rapproche les termites des blattes qui ont un régime omnivore.

OBS

Ne pas confondre cette acception avec celle de l'obsession de manger, qui est le sens le plus connu de «polyphagie».
