Polystyrene is made by bulk or suspension polymerization of styrene.... Its major characteristics include rigidity, transparency, high refractive index, no taste, odor, or toxicity, good electrical insulation characteristics, low water absorption, and ease of coloring and processing. It is, however, attacked by hydrocarbons, esters, ketones, and essential oils. A more serious limitation of polystyrene in many applications is its brittleness. 4, record 1, English, - polystyrene

2, record 6, French, - polystyr%C3%A8ne%20extrud%C3%A9

Extruded polystyrene [XEPS] foam begins with solid polystyrene crystals. The crystals, along with special additives and a blowing agent, are fed into an extruder. Within the extruder the mixture is combined and melted, under controlled conditions of high temperature and pressure, into a viscous plastic fluid. The hot, thick liquid is then forced in a continuous process through a die. As it emerges from the die it expands to a foam, is shaped, cooled, and trimmed to dimension. This continuous extrusion process results in a unique foam product with a uniform closed-cell structure, a smooth continuous skin, and consistent product qualities, qualities unequaled by other insulation types. 6, record 8, English, - extruded%20polystyrene%20foam

Curiously, extruded foam panels from the same manufacturer exhibit considerable variation in density ... ranging from 1.8 to 2.1 pounds per cubic foot, all in the same batch. ...

2, record 9, French, - feuille%20de%20base%20enduite

DOW Styrofoam is used for thermally insulating foundations, cellars, and roofs and for ground-frost protection of soil structures. The products are made of extruded blue cellular polystyrene. During the manufacturing of DOW Styrofoam products, the molten polystyrene is extruded through the die under extreme pressure after which it expands to the desired thickness. Dow’s manufacturing process produces a homogeneous cellular structure giving the encapsulated final product outstanding thermal insulating properties. 2, record 11, English, - cellular%20polystyrene
