Dès la 4ème semaine de la vie embryonnaire, une crête mammaire s'étend de la partie antérieure de l'aisselle à l'aine pour disparaître vers la 6ème semaine avec persistance de deux bourgeons mammaires pectoraux. Dans 0,6 % des cas, des mamelons surnuméraires (polythélie) vont persister le long de ces crêtes surtout au niveau du futur sillon sous-mammaire ou dans le creux axillaire.
