CONT

Heap leaching is often the most cost-effective way to extract value from gold or copper ores. Heap leaching involves placing ore-grade material on an impermeable liner foundation with a solution collection system of drainpipes and irrigating the surface with either cyanide solution(for gold) or acid(for copper). Within the heap, chemical reactions occur which liberate the payable metal from the rock. The resultant solution, called pregnant leach solution(PLS), reaches the liner and the collection pipes, and then reports to a storage facility(pond) for processing where the metal is removed, the solution conditioned, and re-applied to the HLP [heap leach pad] as barren leach solution(BLS).

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense(lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond's surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn. "

When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation.

Aquatic weeds can be grouped by the following categories : algae, and emersed, floating, submersed and marginal(shoreline) weeds. Algae are green, stringy mats, sometimes called "pond scum". Algae are primitive plants without leaves, stems or roots. Emersed aquatic weeds generally are rooted in the soil, with part of the plant growing above the water surface.... Floating aquatic weeds are seed-bearing plants that float freely on the surface of the water or have leaves that float on the surface, connected by long stems to roots in the lake bottom. Submersed aquatic weeds are rooted in the soil and the entire plant is under the surface of the water. Some submersed aquatic weeds have flowers that emerge above the water surface.
