Subject field(s)
  • Energy Transformation
  • Solar Energy
DEF

[A] solar... pond which uses a transparent polymer that floats on top of salt water and acts as a thermal insulator.

OBS

Heat trapped beneath the polymer layer is then harnessed by circulating the hot water through an external heat exchanger.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Transformation de l'énergie
  • Énergie solaire
DEF

Record 3 2008-02-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Heating
  • Energy Transformation
  • Solar Energy
DEF

A solar pond that consists of three main layers.

OBS

The top layer is near ambient temperature and has a low salt content. The bottom layer is hot - typically 160-212°F (71-100°C) - and is very salty. The important gradient zone separates these zones. The gradient zone acts as a transparent insulator, permitting sunlight to be trapped in the hot bottom layer (from which useful heat is withdrawn).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chauffage
  • Transformation de l'énergie
  • Énergie solaire
DEF

Bassin solaire composé de trois couches principales.

OBS

CONT

Ohio’s program creates measurable standards by assigning every water body at least one beneficial use. Beneficial use designations describe existing or potential uses of water bodies. They take into consideration the use and value of public water supplies, protection and propagation of aquatic life, recreation in and on the water, and agricultural, industrial and other purposes. ... Aquatic Life Habitat Use Designation. Warmwater Habitat (WWH) Capable of supporting and maintaining a balanced community of warmwater aquatic organisms. This is the most widely applied use designation assigned to warmwater rivers and streams in Ohio.

CONT

[A] critical environmental factor that directly influences the gas impact on water organisms is the concentration of dissolved oxygen.

OBS

Used in the plural, the concrete expression "aquatic organisms" can be replaced by the abstract concept of "aquatic life" (q.v.). One can also be more specific and use the expression "aquatic fauna and flora."

OBS

water organisms : This expression is usually specified by an adjective, e. g. ballast water organisms, cold water organisms, deep water organisms, fresh water organisms, pond water organisms, salt water organisms, warm water organisms, waste water organisms, etc.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Solar Energy
CONT

Solar salt pond generating project. A body of water that collects solar energy and stores it as thermal energy. The introduction of salt into a pond allows the density of the pond water to be controlled. A salinity gradient within the pond allows thermal storage in the dense high-salinity water near the pond bottom. The stored thermal energy is used to drive a Rankine-cycle heat engine.

CONT

Salt-gradient solar ponds operate with three distinct zones of increasing salinity from the surface to the bottom. The bottom, or storage zone, is a convective layer of near-saturated brine. The intermediate or gradient zone is a non-convective insulating layer of decreasing salinity towards the surface zone. The surface zone is a thin convective layer of fresh or slightly saline water.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie solaire
DEF
