Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense(lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond's surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn. " 5, record 14, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 14, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover: A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Also see overturning. 6, record 14, English, - spring%20overturn

Aquatic weeds can be grouped by the following categories : algae, and emersed, floating, submersed and marginal(shoreline) weeds. Algae are green, stringy mats, sometimes called "pond scum". Algae are primitive plants without leaves, stems or roots. Emersed aquatic weeds generally are rooted in the soil, with part of the plant growing above the water surface.... Floating aquatic weeds are seed-bearing plants that float freely on the surface of the water or have leaves that float on the surface, connected by long stems to roots in the lake bottom. Submersed aquatic weeds are rooted in the soil and the entire plant is under the surface of the water. Some submersed aquatic weeds have flowers that emerge above the water surface. Marginal aquatic weeds can be herbaceous or woody and grow around the margins of the water. Marginal aquatic weeds may grow either in the shallow water or along the banks of the shoreline. 3, record 15, English, - aquatic%20weed

3, record 15, French, - mauvaise%20herbe%20aquatique

Most beginners believe pond filters remove physical dirt and keep the water sparkling clear. This is not quite the case. Filters will certainly remove some physical dirt but only dirt that gets pumped into them. Most physical waste such as fish waste, excess food or decaying organic material will fall to the bottom of the pond where it will start breaking down into toxins. This is where filters start doing their work as a mini sewerage system for the pond. 2, record 30, English, - pond%20filter

In certain circumstances it may be desirable to shape the ground to allow surface water to collect in a water storage pond on site. This concept of retaining surface water run-off by reducing the peak water impact on the storm sewer capacity and by providing an attractive site feature, may be economical on large sites. It may also be possible to use a less expensive underground sewer system with fewer or smaller diameter pipes because the peak water impact will be collected by the retention pond instead of the sewer system. 2, record 48, English, - retention%20pond

4, record 50, French, - %C3%A9paississeur

The water lily pond is built to house beautiful water lilies(hardy + tropical), marginal plants and lotus. This is a complete world with 1, 000's of plants to choose from. These ponds require a minimum of 4-6 hours of sunlight, usually, in order for the majority of plants to thrive(shade or partial shade is fine for fish and fountains). Raccoons can eat your water lilies. Prevention would be to build the sides of the pond quite steep and keep the plants deep enough to prevent easy wading. 1, record 53, English, - water%20lily%20pond

A pond is not an essential feature of the bog garden, although its presence is to be desired when you can use the overflow to feed a marsh. It is essential, that the soil of the marsh garden be kept in a moist, swampy state through out year. The site of the bog garden must, naturally, be low-lying and where the surface drainage will naturally collect. If the subsoil is of sticky clay, a mere trickle of water will keep the ground in a sufficiently moist condition. Should the subsoil be light and well drained, a certain amount of excavation will be necessary before the bog garden can be made. 1, record 54, English, - bog%20garden

Polychaete worms are serious pests in coastal ponds. They live in burrows on the pond bottom and make the soil porous, reducing the water-holding capacity of the ponds.... Among the pests in coastal aquaculture farms, probably the most noxious ones that affect the safety of the farm itself are crabs... In coastal areas, crabs are found in great abundance and so the damage that they do to the farm can be immense. Water flowing through crab holes can cause the complete collapse of dikes... Solar salt pond generating project. A body of water that collects solar energy and stores it as thermal energy. A "geovalve" is a rather unusual geotextile-soil composite which has been conceived and tested in laboratory. The basic function of a geovalve composite is to act as an impermeable layer, preventing liquid escaping from containment ponds. The novel aspect of the geovalve is that, when high water or gas pressures build up in the underlying soil, it acts as a one-way valve, allowing these high gas or water pressures to discharge through the containment pond, thereby avoiding potential damage. 1, record 64, English, - geovalve
