This small, rare spider is one of only two native cellar spiders in Canada. The species has a restricted range within bunchgrass and ponderosa pine dominated ecosystems and is found only within a specific habitat within these ecosystems.

The BG zone occurs at low elevations in the very dry valley bottoms in the southern interior(Chilcotin, Fraser, lower Thompson, Nicola, Similkameen, lower Kettle, Okanagan Lake). It occurs below the PP [ponderosa pine] zone or in some areas below the IDF [interior Douglas-fir] zone. It is one of the smallest zones in BC covering only 0. 3% of the province.

Limb rust is caused by a group of fungi with poorly understood taxonomy including Peridermium filamentosum, Cronartium arizonicum, C. coleosporioides, and probably other taxa.

CONT

Several rusts of the Cronartium coleosporioides complex are damaging to ponderosa pine. Locally, especially in the Southwest, limb rust(Peridermium filamentosum) attacks middle or upper crowns of mature trees, killing branches in both directions as it spreads.
