Flat wetlands are associated with flat terrains. Their hydrology is maintained by precipitation as opposed to groundwater seepage. Although ponding may occur in periods of heavy rain, standing water is rarely more than a few centimeters unlike in depressional features where water depths are much deeper resulting in water pooling or ponding for long periods of time.

Peaking reduces discharge during the night and increases it during the day, while meeting the required daily average. It is allowed throughout the year, with a maximum combined deviation of 30, 000 cfs above or below the daily average discharge(when the weekly average is 250, 000 cfs or less).
