A plaza for all seasons. People who live in, work in or visit Hull, Quebec, have a beautiful new public space to enjoy, thanks to a PWGSC [Public Works and Government Services Canada]-managed restoration and redesign project. The newly reopened plaza at Parc du Portage is popular among employees at lunchtime, but is also drawing strollers in the evening and bringing new life into the downtown area. The plaza is located between Phases I and II of the Government of Canada Place du Portage office complex and the provincial/municipal Maison du Citoyen building. The plaza is a few minutes’ walk from the Museum of Civilization, one of the national capital' s major visitor attractions. An underground parking garage owned by the Government of Canada is situated beneath the plaza. The restoration and redesign project had two main components--repair of the waterproof membrane of the garage roof, which had been leaking, and restoration of the plaza. Improvements to the plaza included the addition of more fountains in the pool, and the construction of a low wall around the pool providing places to sit. At night, innovative new lighting casts a shimmering reflection onto the nearby building walls. The plaza should also be a hit in winter because of a versatile design that allows the pool fountains to be dismantled and the pool to be converted into a skating rink.

Landscape lighting does not usually attempt to duplicate the effect of daylight. Instead, the lighting should capture the nighttime mood; trees retire into mystery; the surface of a pool becomes calm. The lighting designer should consider how the lighting will affect both close-up and distant views of the scene. He or she should decide what landscape features and relationships should be emphasized and which ones should be permitted to fade into the darkness. The topography of the area should be studied, since the relative elevations of the features in view can have a profound effect on their visual importance and may result in their being viewed from above as well as from ground level.

Pool lighting equipment is available in both 120 volt and 12 volt systems.... The bulbs used for underwater lighting are not the same as those above ground. They are designed to operate at higher temperatures taking advantage of the water for cooling. This is important because pool lights will burn out if they are operated above the water surface.

Tree lighting reflected in a placid swimming pool makes a relaxing nighttime environment.

OBS

There are almost as many ways of illuminating trees as there are botanical varieties of them. Individual trees are so variable in shape, even within a single variety, and groups of trees exhibit such an extraordinary variety of form, that each tree-lighting assignment merits being approached afresh, with no preconceived notions of any "ideal" effect or "ideal" lighting solution.
