Léger, le pétrole cherche naturellement à monter. Il a tendance à gagner la surface en empruntant les fissures et les minuscules canaux des roches perméables. S’il parvient à la surface, les produits légers qu’il contient s’évaporent, le reste suinte, il n’y aura pas de gisement. Mais si, sur sa route, le pétrole rencontre une couche poreuse et perméable, surmontée d’une couche imperméable formant un piège, alors il va s’accumuler dans cette roche-magasin et former un gisement.

Contrairement à une idée reçue, un réservoir de pétrole n’est pas un immense lac souterrain. Les hydrocarbures sont emmagasinés dans une roche poreuse et perméable (roche réservoir) qu’on pourrait comparer à une éponge imbibée d’eau.
