POPULATION CARRYING CAPACITY [8 records]

Record 1 2023-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
  • Oceanography
CONT

Individual differences, such as age, sex, and condition, can greatly affect their contribution to population growth and consequently the same population size can lead to different population trajectories.... Time series analysis on a population of the NW [northwestern] Italian Speleomantes strinatii showed that the population trajectory is stable and that the population was probably fluctuating near the environmental carrying capacity.

OBS

population trajectory: term in use at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

OBS

The population trajectory is described by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as increasing, stable, decreasing or unknown.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Écologie (Généralités)
  • Océanographie
OBS

OBS

CCN is a national non-profit advocacy group working to secure the sustainable future of the United States.

OBS

CCN is a group of activists working to promote and conserve what’s right with America and to eliminate what’s wrong with America. Most of America’s main problems - from traffic, to classroom crowding, to pollution, depletion, welfare dependency, increasing taxes, and cultural fragmentation - have deep roots in [the] unsustainable population growth. Because of that, CCN focuses on stabilizing [the] population.

OBS

Carrying Capacity Network confronts the controversial issues, makes the difficult choices, and adopts the innovative approaches necessary to meet the challenges facing [the] nation. CCN's action-oriented initiatives focus on achieving national revitalization, population stabilization, immigration reduction, economic sustainability, and resource conservation.

Record 3 2012-02-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
DEF

A non-dynamic assessment of the material quantity or energy in various compartments of an ecosystem, and of the fluxes between the compartments.

CONT

A one-dimensional ecosystem box model is presented for carrying capacity assessment. The model includes physical and biological processes. The physical processes are the transport of nutrients, suspended matter and phytoplankton through the system boundaries and between model boxes. The biological processes are primary production and oyster(Crassostrea gigas) population dynamics and physiology. The model was implemented using an object-oriented approach.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Biochemistry
CONT

If in its quest to out-survive other species, a dominant species destroys the environment’s life-support capacity, that species itself dies.

OBS

Compare with "carrying capacity"(in French :"capacité de charge"), which expresses the life-support capacity of an ecosystem by indicating the maximal population size of a given species that a given area can support.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Études et analyses environnementales
  • Biochimie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Ecosystems
DEF

The population (as of one species of animal) that a given area (as of water or pasture) will support without undergoing deterioration.

CONT

The concept of sustainability is directly related to carrying capacity. "Carrying capacity" can be defined as "the maximal population size of a given species that an area can support without reducing its ability to support the same species in the future. "

OBS

The carrying capacity of an ecosystem is the expression of its "life-support capacity" (in French: "capacité biologique") (q.v.). See also "ecological footprint."

PHR

Appropriated, total carrying capacity.

PHR

To keep, to stay within the Earth’s carrying capacity.

Key term(s)
  • ecological capacity
  • ecosystem carrying capacity

French

Domaine(s)
  • Études et analyses environnementales
  • Écosystèmes
DEF

... it was necessary to examine the magnitude of the increase in phosphorus loading to the lake. In this regard, several important factors such as phosphorus loading from other sources, flushing rate of the lake, capacity of the shoreline soils to bind phosphorus, and so on, required investigation. It was recognized that the critical link between phosphorus levels and effects on the trout population was the oxygen level(or more correctly, the oxygen deficit) in the hypolimnion. This oxygen level could be translated into carrying capacity for trout which determined the maximum trout biomass that could be supported by the lake.
