Synthetic gene drives are a new form of genetic engineering that overcomes the normal rules of inheritance, and which may allow the deliberate eradication or modification of species and populations in the wild. Gene drives distort the process of inheritance so that the probability of particular genes—and thus specific traits—being passed on is increased substantially above the usual 50%(known as the Mendelian rule of inheritance). Over the course of several generations, genes with higher inheritance rates will rapidly spread through a breeding population... Thus, in theory at least, a gene drive can be employed to force genetic changes into an entire population. 4, record 1, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive

gene drive: In English, a differentiation is sometimes made between a synthetic gene drive, a bioengineered process, and a natural gene drive, a natural process of inheritance. Consequently, it may be preferable to use the designations "synthetic gene drive" and "engineered gene drive" when referring to the bioengineered process. 5, record 1, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive

4, record 1, French, - for%C3%A7age%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

[The] new Bayesian model estimates the proportion of pups that are unavailable to the survey because they have moved out of the area. The new birth distribution model should be used to refit the complete time series of pup production in order to incorporate it in future assessments. This is the second assessment that has resulted in a significant downward revision in the previous estimate of grey seal abundance. These changes are due to a slowing in the rate of increase in pup production, using a different assessment model, and a new male : female sex ratio. The new model provides a significant downward revision in estimated juvenile survival and indicates that the dynamics of the grey seal population are changing relatively rapidly in a manner that is not well understood. 3, record 9, English, - downward%20revision

Inconstant catchability among individual fish has been widely recognized... as a major source of error in depletion estimates of population size when using models [that] assume constant catchability. Inconstant catchability is a feature of populations that contain individuals with different vulnerabilities to capture or when their behaviour changes with successive hauls. The effect is to cause a rapid depletion of the more vulnerable individuals after the first unit(or few units) of effort is applied, leaving behind a pool of animals with a lower [catchability]. 2, record 12, English, - inconstant%20catchability

[The study] recommends the use of stage-structured models in which stages are embedded within age classes. This effectively increases the number of stages in a model. Such a population matrix can be constructed if one collects information on the stage of individuals in addition to age in order to construct a life table in which individuals are categorized into different age and stage classes. This approach is also useful when life history strategies are complex or when they do not exhibit age-dependent changes in vital rates. 1, record 13, English, - stage%2Dstructured%20model

The interpretation is that we can expect to have reasonable success in predicting short-term, spatially limited changes to individuals or specific population as a result of direct physical effects. In other words, by combining the results of experimental laboratory and field studies involving the elements on the left side of the gradient scale, it may be possible to quantitatively predict, with a useful degree of accuracy, non-chronic direct impacts. 1, record 41, English, - short%2Dterm%20change

The general principles of plant community succession, applied to the species complex in the wetlands and the expected changes in the moisture regime, could be used to predict the future plant community within specified time and space boundaries. Predicting, in any rigorous sense, the effects of the resulting habitat changes on species of concern would be difficult due to the complexity of most species-habitat interactions. Furthermore, it would be unlikely that the effects of the loss of habitat on the longer-term population dynamics of such species could be determined beforehand. 1, record 42, English, - moisture%20regime
