2, record 11, Spanish, - teor%C3%ADa%20Y

The results of epidemiological studies obviously depend on the comparisons made between the cases and control groups used. If the groups are not well matched, the results will not be meaningful. For this reason cases and control groups may be matched for age, sex and race, as well as lifestyle factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. Occupational groups very often have lower total mortality than the general population as the latter includes people unable to work due to illness or disability. In other words, any group of workers is likely to be more healthy than the population as a whole, a phenomenon known as the "healthy worker effect. Black bug... The insect is common in rainfed and irrigated wetland environments during the vegetative stages of the rice crop. It prefers continuously cropped irrigated rice areas and poorly drained fields. Damages are observed more frequently in dry season rice crops and densely planted fields are preferred... One of the cultural control practices to reduce the population of the black bug is to maintain a clean field by removing the weeds and drying the rice field during plowing.... Mechanical control measures include the use of mercury bulbs as light traps for egg-laying adults. 4, record 27, English, - black%20paddy%20bug

JAYBIRD-WOODPECKER WAR. The Jaybird-Woodpecker War was a feud between two political factions for the control of Fort Bend County. The Jaybirds, representing the wealth and about 90 percent of the white population, were the regular Democrats who sought to rid the county of the Republican government that had gained control during Reconstruction. The Woodpeckers, numbering about forty persons and also claiming to be Democrats, were the officials and former officials who held office as a result of the black vote for the Republican ticket. The term Attract & Kill(or Lure and Kill) is normally used for pheromone(or other attractant) based control methods that use an insecticide to kill the target pest. Mass Trapping, as the name implies, depends on the use of a mechanical device(insect trap) to remove the insect from the population. From a theoretical point of view, the approaches are very similar. Both methods rely on attracting the pest to a pheromone(or other attractant) source and removing the insect from the breeding population. 2, record 29, English, - mass%20trapping

The San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant(Plant)... Over the past several years, the service area population of the Plant has grown significantly. The total dry-weather influent volume from ultimate build-out of the Plant's service area is projected to be 180 million gallons per day(mgd), which is the recommended value for setting aside land required for ultimate wastewater treatment capacity for the future. Wet weather peak flow capacity issues will require additional land be set aside. 2, record 39, English, - wet%20weather%20peak%20flow

Continued growth in the Mendenhall and Lemon Creek Valleys required new wastewater collection systems. Ten new pumping stations and associated interceptor sewers were added to carry wastewater to the ABF Facility. Development continued and 1982, the ABF Facility was treating 2.0 mgd daily and was again over design capacity during wet weather peak flow periods with influent flows of 4.0+ mgd. Correction of inflow and infiltration (1 and 1) in the collection system began. However, an expansion of treatment capacity was required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce the numerous discharge permit violations. 3, record 39, English, - wet%20weather%20peak%20flow

Influent flow control to increase the pollution load treated during rainy periods... As for the system management, the French Decree of 22 December 1995 states that flows or pollution loads exceeding the reference capacity of the treatment plant may be temporarily admitted. This is especially interesting in the case of separate wastewater sewerage, as inappropriate connections of runoff water and rainfall induced infiltration cause hydraulic overloads in such networks. An automated influent flow control has been implemented on a 8000 population equivalent plant to admit a maximum of twice the dry weather peak flow : the clarifier is then dynamically managed so that neither sludge loss nor degradation through anoxic conditions may occur. 2, record 40, English, - dry%20weather%20peak%20flow

The parasitic fungus Beauveria was the most novel practice, and the main form of biological control tested in the project. The fungus, which is native to the Andes but usually not found at population densities high enough to be an effective form of control, is mixed into the soil where potatoes are stored on the ground. The fungus attacks weevils when they emerge from the tubers to pupate in the ground. The fungus is easy to apply and is similar to the traditional use of ash to combat insect infestations in farmers’ stores. The effect of the parasitic fungus on the pest is highly visible; therefore, farmers were quick to comprehend the efficacy of this practice(Torres et al., 1993). 1, record 42, English, - parasitic%20fungus

2, record 48, French, - lib%C3%A9ration%20massive

Most of the benefits of foreign investment are economic in nature.... There is no strong "noneconomic" or social argument for foreign ownership or control as an ethical end in itself.... the economic argument for continuing to permit, or encourage, foreign ownership is that infusions of capital from abroad raise the productivity of Canadian labor. In this way they raise GNP, and make it possible for the population to grow without diminishing returns. 3, record 50, English, - foreign%20ownership

To control rabies in free-ranging animals, health officials in the 1950s had depended on thinning populations that harbored the offending virus. They tried gassing of dens, poisoning, trapping and shooting, among other tactics... Biologists reviewing some 10 years of experience with population-reduction programs for foxes, skunks and raccoons concluded that to improve the success rate, enormous numbers of animals would have to be killed. Because the species reproduce prolifically, destruction of more than 60 percent of a population would often be required to ensure that eradication of rabies persisted beyond one reproductive cycle... 1, record 53, English, - population%2Dreduction%20program

A variation of the mixed lymphocyte culture(MLC) techniques that is a functional test of the ability of cytotoxic lymphocytes(CTL) to kill target cells. Lymphocytes from two individuals are cultured together for several days, one population having been prevented from proliferating by treatment with radiation or mitomycin(a "one-way" MLC) ;they are then cultured for several hours with 51CR-labeled target cells that are HLA-identical to the stimulator cells. Cytotoxicity is measured as percentage of 51CR released from specific target cells compared to percentage of 51CR released from control(nonspecific target) cells. 1, record 54, English, - cell%2Dmediated%20lympholysis
