Through the Provincial Police Service Agreement, the RCMP is given primary policing responsibility for about 22 per cent of Alberta's population. This includes every town, village and summer village with populations of 5, 000 or less, every municipal district and Metis settlement regardless of population, and in First Nations where other policing arrangements have not been made. The Solicitor General' s Public Security Division oversees the PPSA, and works with the RCMP to set annual priorities and goals. The RCMP has always acted as Alberta's provincial police service, except for a 15-year period after the First World War.

In 1982, the Native Affairs Secretariat was created in response to increasing urbanization of Manitoba's Aboriginal population and related requirements for government services. The Secretariat served as an advisor, particularly on Aboriginal social and economic issues, and reported to the Minister Responsible for Native Affairs and the Native Affairs Committee of Cabinet. Responding to growing emphasis on self-governance, the Native Affairs Secretariat participated in tri-partite negotiations between the province, Canada and Aboriginal community representatives. In 1999, the department was renamed Aboriginal and Norther Affairs. The Secretariat was amalgamated with the Agreements Management and Coordination Division and was renamed Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat. The reorganized department, as partners and consultants, is committed to working with Aboriginal and northern Manitobans to help address the issues affecting them.

Developing Hormosira banksii embryos, used as bioassays in toxicity studies, identified ammonium as a toxicant in secondary treated sewage effluent discharged at Boags Rocks, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium did not affect fertilization but had a significant effect on germination at 48 h and cell division at 72 h with most damage occurring in the first 48 h. Ammonium showed a similar effect as whole effluent(when expressed as mg N l-1 ammonium), sampled in June, September and November 1997, on developing H. banksii embryos. This similarity is further confirmed with comparable EC50(concentration causing an effect on 50% of the population tested) and LOEC(lowest observable effect concentration) values. Mean EC50 values for the ammonium bioassays were 3. 19 mg N l-1 for germination and 6. 14 mg N l-1 for cell division.

A classification of units of a statistical population according to the presence or absence of an attribute is called division by dichotomy, i. e. formation of two classes.
