Fish populations naturally vary from year to year due to a number of factors including interspecies interactions and changes in the environment, as well as human fishing pressure... In each catch, the fish are kept apart and are not released until the end of the last catch. This method leads to a depletion of the population number, which means that the number of fish caught in each catch will decrease. This makes it possible to make a linear regression between the number of fish caught in each catch(Y-axis) and accumulated number of fishes caught in the previous catches(X-axis). Like this, one can make a population estimate by calculating the intercept with the X-axis. 1, record 3, English, - de%20Lury%20catch%2Ddepletion%20system

There have been no artificial stocking programs for Atlantic sturgeon since the [threatened or endangered species] listings. While it is possible that these could be a tool for recovery in the future, there is no apparent need for these programs... because current evidence suggests that remnant, albeit very small, populations may exist in rivers where Atlantic sturgeon were previously believed to be extirpated. In addition, it is uncertain whether an artificial stock would establish in a non-natal river. For example, genetic analyses of adult sturgeon captured in [one river] indicates that the fish are a remnant of the historical spawning population and are not the sturgeon or the progeny of the sturgeon that were introduced to the [same river]. 2, record 6, English, - artificial%20stock

The identification of stock structure is a necessary step for the effective management of multistock fisheries. As stocks are reproductively isolated from other members of the population, disregard of individual stock dynamics may alter genetic diversity of a population if one or more stocks are lost due to overexploitation or other causes... The knowledge of individual stock dynamics allows managers to assess fish population stability and set sustainable harvest limits. Monitoring inidividual stock dynamics within a population provides the opportunity to assess differential survival and contribution to the fishery. Once stock structure is uncovered, patterns in stock contribution can be managed by setting up measures to enhance or sustain stocks when annual production is lower than desired. 2, record 17, English, - multistock%20fishery

Mortality is a key component to understanding population dynamics of fish species. Total mortality is often estimated from the sequential decline observed in cohorts of fish.... catch curve [methods are] used to analyze this decline... All catch curves have three regions of interest : an ascending left limb, a domed middle portion, and a descending right limb... The ascending left limb represents age-classes of fish that are not yet fully vulnerable to the gear used in fishery. Fish in these age-classes are said to have "not fully recruited to the fishery. "The catches of fish in these age-classes are not useful for estimating the total mortality rate. 4, record 36, English, - ascending%20left%20limb

Because all sockeye salmon die after spawning, and always in the same year that they attain maturity, the number of mature fish in the population is usually estimated as the number of fish that survive to spawn. In most populations, this is roughly equivalent to the numbers that survive coastal fisheries and reach their natal spawning habitat(called the "spawning escapement"). 4, record 42, English, - spawning%20escapement

Alberta produced a report that provides a snapshot of the status of more than 2800 wild species in the province, entitled The General Status of Alberta Wild Species 2005. The report contains assessments for 2811 species under 10 categories : birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, butterflies, gastropods(e. g., snails), bivalves(e. g., clams), odonates(e. g., dragonflies) and vascular plants(e. g., wild roses). These assessments are based on criteria that include species’ population size, distribution and trends, and threats to habitats. Assessment information is categorized into meaningful groupings, which helps the province identify species that need attention. Species’ status data are used by provincial wildlife and fisheries biologists to plan and set priorities for species’ management activities. These activities may include identifying habitat, monitoring survival and identifying threats. 1, record 50, English, - The%20General%20Status%20of%20Alberta%20Wild%20Species%202005

Inundated rice fields always have a small population of fish which gain access with the water, and this probably gave rise to the practise of deliberate stocking and harvesting. The trapping of shrimp larvae in fallow rice fields and growing to market size is an old age-old practice and still exists in parts in India. It is believed that rice-field culture was introduced into Southeast Asia from India about 1500 years ago Tamura, 1961). 2, record 63, English, - rice%2Dfish%20culture

3, record 63, French, - rizipisciculture

Participants at the Brandon workshop were exposed to a comprehensive computer model known as the ’Lakeshore Capacity Simulation Model', Teleki and Herskowitz, 1982), developed by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for the purpose of examining the environmental impacts of cottage developments on inland lakes in Ontario. The model was used in a ’gaming’ mode as the participants considered the design of an environmental impact assessment for a hypothetical cottage development on the shores of Reed Lake in north-central Manitoba. An important component of the model involved impacts on lake sport fish.... The model was capable of examining two distinct pressures on the lake trout population, namely, fishing pressure and eutrophication of the lake. 1, record 64, English, - gaming%20mode

Indicator of Change. The indicator is used to denote either (i) a biophysical component or variable which is monitored to detect change in that component or variable or (ii) a calculated index of the condition of all or part of an ecosystem. Such indicators are considered to be generally unrelated to the valued ecosystem components identified for the assessment. Biophysical components or variables that are related to, and used to indicate the condition of, the valued ecosystem components have been termed surrogates. 1, record 66, English, - indicator%20of%20change

1, record 66, French, - indicateur%20de%20changement
