CONT

Conservation genetics is a mixture of ecology, molecular biology, population genetics, mathematical modeling and evolutionary systematics(the construction of family relationships). It is both a basic and an applied science. Scientists must first understand the genetic relationships of the organisms under study.... management techniques must then be applied by wildlife managers to preserve biological diversity in these species.... Information about the genetic diversity of the [plants and] animals under study helps scientists and managers in forming strategies to preserve and protect the diversity of plants and animals worldwide.

CONT

Conservation genetics [is] concerned with the population genetics principles involved in the maintenance of feral species. The maintenance of the populations depends on inbreeding, outbreeding, effective population size, deleterious mutation, reproductive success, adaptation to captivity, reintroduction, vagility, outbreeding depression, extinction, etc.

Domaine(s)

CONT

Subject field(s)

DEF

The study of the genetics and ecology of local races and distinct species.

CONT

An essential component of population ecology is the study of population genetics(ecological genetics), which deals with the behaviour of genes in natural populations. Among areas studied are the change of gene frequencies in nature, the operation of natural selection on genetic characteristics, and the occurrence of polymorphism in species in nature. These problems are studied in theoretical model systems, in the laboratory, and in field populations.

Cow evaluations for milk and fat yield are expressed in breed-class average units(BCA) as estimated transmitting ability(ETA) or one-half the additive genetic value of the cow. A majority(about 59%) of the cow indexes are negative which is a consequence of typing the cow indexes across herds through common usage of AI sires. The genetic base used for expression of sire evaluation is such that the average proof of multi-herd use(five or more) sires is zero for bulls whose first daughter freshened within the past five years. As there is a time lag for dissemination of their genetics into the cow population, the average cow index will therefore be less than zero if genetic progress is being made.

Electrophoretic separation of allelic variants of enzymes(allozymes) has been used to study the population genetics of a wide variety of species for many years. Although electrophoretically-evident variation is only a small portion of the genetic variation of a gene, many enzymes have been shown to exhibit high levels of allozymic variation. More recently, genetic variation at the molecular level [i. e., structural traits of nucleic acids such as DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid) ] has been used in population genetic studies. A variety of technical approaches have been used to assay molecular variation for population genetic studies.

A branch of genetics that describes(in mathematical terms) the consequences of mendelian inheritance on the population level. It deals with the frequencies and interactions of genes in so called "Mendelian populations" and studies the influences of agencies such as mutation, natural and artificial selection, migration, mixing of races and chance factors which tend to alter gene frequencies and thus to cause evolutionary changes(evolution).
