Although no formal consensus about the definition of population health research yet exists... most descriptions of the field include one or more of the following characterizations :Population health research is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the health outcomes of groups of individuals, which can be defined variously(e. g., workers at a workplace, residents of a neighborhood, people sharing a common race or social status, or the population of a nation). Population health researchers conduct studies that seek to characterize, explain and/or influence the levels and distributions of health within and across populations. Population health researchers view health as the product of multiple determinants at the biologic, genetic, behavioral, social, and environmental levels and their interactions among individuals and groups and across time and generations.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research(CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada(SSHRC) were pleased to announce funding offered under the Community Alliances for Health Research Program. The CAHR Program is one of several transition programs launched in October of 1999 leading to the creation of CIHR. The intent of the CAHR Program is to foster excellent research of relevance to community groups and agencies in the four themes of health research : biomedical, clinical, health services and systems and population health including the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health. The program facilitates mutual learning and collaboration among community organizations and partnerships with researchers based in local universities, hospitals and other not-for-profit institutions. In addition to contributing to the improved health quality of life in communities involved in CAHRs, the program provides unique opportunities for training of health researchers in all disciplines.

The proposed primary goal of CHRIMCY are to initiate, support and disseminate excellence in peer-reviewed research encompassing the critical stages of life, including preconception, pregnancy, fetal and newborn development, and growth and development throughout childhood and adolescence. These primary goals define the nature of research that would be supported by the proposed institute, and clearly distinguish this institute from others that may form within the CIHR. Research would be conducted in the fields of basic biomedical science, clinical and applied health, health services and health care systems, and population health, with a particular focus on the determinants of health. The proposed main objectives of CHRIMCY is to reinforce individual investigator initiatives by aiding in the formation of networks of research teams that would cross disciplines, institutions, regions and the country. This includes providing mechanisms for researchers to work across the institutes of the CIHR. CHRIMCY would have the unique mandate and framework to identify reserach themes and to harness reserach expertise cross the country, and to focus on priority issues affecting the health of mothers, children and youth.

The healthy immigrant effect refers to the observation that immigrants are often in superior health to the native-born population when they first arrive in a new country, by lose this health advantage over time.
