A cancer slope factor gives the percent increase in the risk of getting cancer associated with a dose of a toxin(in mg [milligram] of toxin per kg [kilogram] of body weight) every day for a lifetime.... A risk assessor will apply cancer slope factors and unit risks to test results to calculate how many more cancer cases a population might be likely to see if that population had a lifetime of exposure to that amount of a toxin.... Cancer slope factors and unit risks are usually based on tests on laboratory animals. Sometimes(but rarely) they are based on human health studies from accidental exposure. 4, record 1, English, - cancer%20slope%20factor

Primordial prevention consists of actions to modify population health determinants and to inhibit the establishment of factors(environmental, economic, social, and behavioural) known to increase the risk of future disease. It targets determinants at the societal level rather than modifying personal risk factors, which is the focus of primary prevention. Thus, outlawing alcohol in certain countries would represent primordial prevention, whereas a campaign against drinking and driving would illustrate primary prevention. 2, record 2, English, - primordial%20prevention

The population status of Walleye of Tathlina Lake appears to have improved between 2001 and 2007. The mean size(length and weight) of Walleye and age of Walleye has increased, while the increase in catch-per-unit effort of and proportion of Walleye in the total catch suggests an increase in Walleye biomass in the lake. The presence of the strong 1997 year class that reached sexual maturity in 2003 was left to spawn multiple times without considerable harvest has likely helped improve the status of the population. 3, record 6, English, - population%20status

[The] new Bayesian model estimates the proportion of pups that are unavailable to the survey because they have moved out of the area. The new birth distribution model should be used to refit the complete time series of pup production in order to incorporate it in future assessments. This is the second assessment that has resulted in a significant downward revision in the previous estimate of grey seal abundance. These changes are due to a slowing in the rate of increase in pup production, using a different assessment model, and a new male : female sex ratio. The new model provides a significant downward revision in estimated juvenile survival and indicates that the dynamics of the grey seal population are changing relatively rapidly in a manner that is not well understood. 3, record 7, English, - downward%20revision

2, record 15, French, - plante%20compagne

The predominant theme arising from the Report is the implementation of the Life Line concept. The concept has three essential components. They include InReach Services, which involves a successful lifer or long term offender who contacts, motivates and actively encourages lifers in their preparation for reintegration back to the community. The second is Community Programs and Services, which involves dedicated program resources for Lifers to ensure a process of gradual phased day parole leading to full parole. The final component is Public Education which involves community-based correctional agencies and their InReach workers who contribute to "public" understanding on the nature of the Lifer and long term offender population to increase support and understanding for the released offender. This may include speaking at schools, community organizations and youth at risk. 1, record 19, English, - Life%20Line%20concept

1, record 19, French, - concept%20Life%20Line

Selfish genes are parasitic sequences of DNA that increase their own frequency in a population, usually to the detriment of the organisms that carry them. Although most genes can prosper only by contributing to the well-being of their bearers, there are certain times in the life cycle of an organism when genetic elements can potentially cheat and gain a transmission advantage.... Some genes cheat by inserting extra copies of themselves into cells; some cripple or obliterate their genetic counterparts on other chromosomes. A few can even change the sex of their host so that it produces only eggs or sperm favorable to the gene's distribution. Virtually all species, including humans, harbor at least some selfish genes. 1, record 25, English, - selfish%20gene

Some of our models involve feedback but generally not the kind of iterated(positive) feedback that makes for nonlinearity. In business and economics the theoretical models used for planning have traditionally been linear. "Increase the sales force and we’ll increase the number of sales, "or "Take the growth rate for the last five years and project it for the next five years after compensating for population declines. The demand increase induced by vouchers depends on the size of the population served(relative to the size of the market), the amount of the subsidy received by each household, and the extent to which the subsidy is spent on housing. The amount of the subsidy is easiest to evaluate : housing subsidies are fairly generous, as we might expect from a program that provides welfare recipients and over very low-income households with the median rental housing available. For example, the 1997 Fair Market Rent for a two bedroom apartment in the Oakland MSA is $794, which is about equal to welfare and food stamps benefits combined. 2, record 45, English, - median%20rental%20housing%20property

Influent flow control to increase the pollution load treated during rainy periods... As for the system management, the French Decree of 22 December 1995 states that flows or pollution loads exceeding the reference capacity of the treatment plant may be temporarily admitted. This is especially interesting in the case of separate wastewater sewerage, as inappropriate connections of runoff water and rainfall induced infiltration cause hydraulic overloads in such networks. An automated influent flow control has been implemented on a 8000 population equivalent plant to admit a maximum of twice the dry weather peak flow : the clarifier is then dynamically managed so that neither sludge loss nor degradation through anoxic conditions may occur. 2, record 50, English, - dry%20weather%20peak%20flow
