Most exposure to fluoride for the general population comes from drinking water, beverages and foods prepared from drinking water, and dental products. Fluorides can also be present to a lesser extent in the atmosphere and soil. An allocation factor is a number that represents the proportion of total exposure to fluoride that can be attributed to drinking water for the most sensitive subpopulation. It is used to inform the calculation of the health-based value, which is the numerical value at which health effects could be observed. 1, record 1, English, - allocation%20factor

The air quality health index or "AQHI" is a scale designed to help you understand what the air quality around you means to your health.... The AQHI communicates four primary things : 1. A number from 1 and 10+ indicating the quality of the air. The higher the number, the greater the health risk associated with the air quality. When the amount of air pollution is very high, the number will be reported as 10+. 2. A category that describes the level of health risk associated with the index reading(e. g. Low, Moderate, High, or Very High Health Risk). 3. Health messages customized to each category for both the general population and the ’at risk’ population. 4. 4. [The authors] describe a method for generating an artificial society consisting of three parts : a population, an environment, and a set of rules. Their society is agent-based and micro-level, but the agents are only identified by a small number of attributes, so they lack personality and other believable properties. The agents are not networked together from the generation phase, but the set of rules [governs] the agents’ behaviours and interactions with one another in a cellular automata approach, allowing them to bond and form relationships at runtime... 1, record 5, English, - artificial%20society

The information available regarding the victimization of children and youth comes from official sources such as Youth Protection Services and the police. In each catch, the fish are kept apart and are not released until the end of the last catch. This method leads to a depletion of the population number, which means that the number of fish caught in each catch will decrease. This makes it possible to make a linear regression between the number of fish caught in each catch(Y-axis) and accumulated number of fishes caught in the previous catches(X-axis). 2, record 25, French, - pression%20de%20p%C3%AAche

[The study] recommends the use of stage-structured models in which stages are embedded within age classes. This effectively increases the number of stages in a model. Such a population matrix can be constructed if one collects information on the stage of individuals in addition to age in order to construct a life table in which individuals are categorized into different age and stage classes. This approach is also useful when life history strategies are complex or when they do not exhibit age-dependent changes in vital rates. 1, record 30, English, - stage%2Dstructured%20model

Because all sockeye salmon die after spawning, and always in the same year that they attain maturity, the number of mature fish in the population is usually estimated as the number of fish that survive to spawn. Mark and recapture is a method commonly used in ecology to estimate an animal population's size. A portion of the population is captured, marked, and released. Later, another portion is captured and the number of marked individuals within the sample is counted. Since the number of marked individuals within the second sample should be proportional to the number of marked individuals in the whole population, an estimate of the total population size can be obtained by dividing the number of marked individuals by the proportion of marked individuals in the second sample. The method is most useful when it is not practical to count all the individuals in the population. 1, record 44, English, - mark%20and%20recapture

2, record 44, French, - marquage%2Drecapture

In order to model the progress of an epidemic in a large population, the population diversity must be reduced to a few key characteristics which are relevant to the infection under consideration. For example, for most common childhood diseases that confer long-lasting immunity, it makes sense to divide the population into those who are susceptible to the disease, those who are infected and those who have recovered and are immune. These subdivisions of the population are called compartments... The SIR model labels these three compartments S=number susceptible, I=number infectious, and R=number recovered(immune). This is a good and simple model for many infectious diseases including measles, mumps and rubella. 4, record 55, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

[The Kermack-McKendrick model] was proposed to explain the rapid rise and fall in the number of infected patients observed in epidemics such as the plague(London 1665-1666, Bombay 1906) and cholera(London 1865). It assumes that the population size is fixed(i. e., no births, deaths due to disease, or deaths by natural causes), incubation period of the infectious agent is instantaneous, and duration of infectivity is same as length of the disease.

The susceptible-infected-susceptible(SIS) model of Weiss and Dishon is one of the simplest models of endemic infections. The model describes the evolution of an infection in a fixed population, with no restriction on the possibility of reinfection of a previously infected and now recovered individual. This is in contrast to the venerable susceptible-infection-recovered(SIR) model, where reinfection is not permitted. Both models exhibit a threshold value of the infectivity, below which the infection immediately dies out. Below the threshold, where only a tiny fraction of the population is impacted, the two models have essentially equivalent statistical properties. Above the threshold, in the SIR model, the infection is self-limiting, since in a fixed population the number of potential new victims, the susceptible pool, is monotonically decreasing in size. The SIS model, on the other hand, describes an endemic infection which can(above the threshold) persist indefinitely, at least at the deterministic level. Thus, the statistics of infection size in the two models above the threshold are very different. 1, record 56, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Dsusceptible%20model

The discovery that bacteria are able to communicate with each other changed our general perception of many single, simple organisms inhabiting our world. Instead of language, bacteria use signalling molecules which are released into the environment. As well as releasing the signalling molecules, bacteria are also able to measure the number(concentration) of the molecules within a population. Nowadays we use the term ’Quorum Sensing’(QS) to describe the phenomenon whereby the accumulation of signalling molecules enable a single cell to sense the number of bacteria(cell density). In the natural environment, there are many different bacteria living together which use various classes of signalling molecules. 1, record 71, French, - Initiative%20de%20partenariats%20en%20action%20communautaire

Cladogenesis defines those cases of evolution in which one species develops into two or more through adaptation. The classic example is the different species unique to the Galapagos Islands, where small populations of creatures from South America evolved in response to their new ecosystem.... There is disagreement about what constitutes a new species, but it's generally agreed that if the mating of individuals from different populations cannot result in fertile and viable offspring, then they belong to different species. Cladogenesis explains the development of a large assortment of species from a smaller set of ancestral species through evolution. Unlike anagenesis, speciation through cladogenesis does not require the extinction of the ancestral population. Through successive cladogenetic splits, either with or without the extinction of the ancestral population, the total number of species increases over time. Cladogenesis is probably a more common form of evolution and speciation than anagenesis. 2, record 76, English, - cladogenesis

Short tandem repeat polymorphisms, also referred to as variable number of tandem repeats(VNTRs), are very important to scientists, because they can be used to identify individuals genetically. Marker systems are used to detect loci that respond to restriction enzyme cleavage by producing a fragment that can have many different lengths. This polymorphism is due to variation in the number of tandem repeats. VNTRs can be identified in various ways. Probes can be developed which will hybridize to complementary sequences after RFLP has been performed on a sample of genomic DNA(Southern blots). A second method involves the use of PCR. If the sequence surrounding the VNTR is known, PCR primers(oligonucleotides) can be designed to amplify the repeat region(s). The information obtained from these experiments is useful in the fields of forensics, population characterization, human gene mapping, identification of genes involved in disease, relationship testing, and identifying genes of interest such as those that encode proteins containing zinc finge. 3, record 77, English, - variable%20number%20of%20tandem%20repeats

2, record 77, French, - nombre%20variable%20de%20r%C3%A9p%C3%A9titions%20en%20tandem

Some of our models involve feedback but generally not the kind of iterated(positive) feedback that makes for nonlinearity. In business and economics the theoretical models used for planning have traditionally been linear. "Increase the sales force and we’ll increase the number of sales, "or "Take the growth rate for the last five years and project it for the next five years after compensating for population declines. "But linear models are notoriously unreliable as predictors, which is their usual function. 1, record 85, English, - linear%20model

Homopoietic progenitor cells generally become committed to a particular pathway of differentiation long before they cease proliferating and terminally differentiate. The committed progenitors go through many rounds of cell division to amplify the ultimate number of cells of the given specialized type. In this way, a single stem-cell division can lead to the production of thousands of differentiated progeny, which explains why the number of stem cells is so small a fraction of the total population of hemopoietic cells. 3, record 89, English, - committed%20progenitor

Developing Hormosira banksii embryos, used as bioassays in toxicity studies, identified ammonium as a toxicant in secondary treated sewage effluent discharged at Boags Rocks, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium did not affect fertilization but had a significant effect on germination at 48 h and cell division at 72 h with most damage occurring in the first 48 h. Ammonium showed a similar effect as whole effluent (when expressed as mg N l-1 ammonium), sampled in June, September and November 1997, on developing H. banksii embryos. This similarity is further confirmed with comparable EC50 (concentration causing an effect on 50% of the population tested) and LOEC (lowest observable effect concentration) values. Mean EC50 values for the ammonium bioassays were 3.19 mg N l-1 for germination and 6.14 mg N l-1 for cell division. 4, record 95, English, - effect%20concentration

4, record 95, French, - concentration%20effective
