When studying evolution, DNA is especially important in its application to identifying and separating organisms into species. However, DNA is a fragile molecule, and it degrades over time. For most fossil species, there is essentially no hope of ever acquiring DNA from their fossils, so answers to questions about their appearance, physiology, population structure, and more may never be fully answerable. For more recently extinct species, scientists have, and continue to, extract ancient DNA(aDNA) which they use to reconstruct the genome of long-gone ancestors and relatives. 4, record 1, English, - ancient%20deoxyribonucleic%20acid

5, record 1, French, - acide%20d%C3%A9soxyribonucl%C3%A9ique%20ancien

The dominant view of the evolution of life is that all existing organisms are derived from some common ancestor and that a new species arises by a splitting of one population into two or more populations that do not crossbreed, rather than by mixing of two populations into one. Therefore, the high level history of life is ideally organized and displayed as a rooted, directed tree. Study of the life with an evolutionary perspective is of utmost importance. Phylogenetic analysis is the study of these evolutionary relationships. 1, record 7, English, - phylogenetic%20analysis

2, record 7, French, - analyse%20phylog%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

The discovery that bacteria are able to communicate with each other changed our general perception of many single, simple organisms inhabiting our world. Instead of language, bacteria use signalling molecules which are released into the environment. As well as releasing the signalling molecules, bacteria are also able to measure the number(concentration) of the molecules within a population. Nowadays we use the term ’Quorum Sensing’(QS) to describe the phenomenon whereby the accumulation of signalling molecules enable a single cell to sense the number of bacteria(cell density). In the natural environment, there are many different bacteria living together which use various classes of signalling molecules. As they employ different languages they cannot necessarily talk to all other bacteria. 2, record 9, English, - quorum%20sensing

Selfish genes are parasitic sequences of DNA that increase their own frequency in a population, usually to the detriment of the organisms that carry them. Although most genes can prosper only by contributing to the well-being of their bearers, there are certain times in the life cycle of an organism when genetic elements can potentially cheat and gain a transmission advantage.... Some genes cheat by inserting extra copies of themselves into cells; some cripple or obliterate their genetic counterparts on other chromosomes. A few can even change the sex of their host so that it produces only eggs or sperm favorable to the gene's distribution. Virtually all species, including humans, harbor at least some selfish genes. 1, record 13, English, - selfish%20gene

It seems desirable to retain the word population for collections of genetically distinct organisms and to coin a modified term for aggregations of parts that comprise, or are derived from, a single genetic individual. The term metapopulation is suggested... in the context of this review it is used to imply the shared elements that make up the morphological structure of a genetic individual, by whatever means these elements are defined. 2, record 23, English, - metapopulation

Population moderation. This ecological function of organisms is a specialized subset of herbivory and carnivory. The recognition of population moderation as an ecological function identifies not only the mere presence of herbivores and carnivores, but the special major effect that activities of selected herbivores and carnivores have upon relative abundance of species that they weaken, kill and/or eat. 1, record 28, English, - population%20moderation
