Mark and recapture is a method commonly used in ecology to estimate an animal population's size. A portion of the population is captured, marked, and released. Later, another portion is captured and the number of marked individuals within the sample is counted. Since the number of marked individuals within the second sample should be proportional to the number of marked individuals in the whole population, an estimate of the total population size can be obtained by dividing the number of marked individuals by the proportion of marked individuals in the second sample. The method is most useful when it is not practical to count all the individuals in the population. 1, record 21, English, - mark%20and%20recapture

3, record 22, French, - morbidit%C3%A9%20ressentie

Analysis of Molecular Variance(AMOVA) is a method for studying molecular variation within a species. Electrophoresis, one of the most widely used methods for studying the structure of DNA, produces data of the form of 0s and 1s where 1 denotes the presence of a band and zero its absence, e. g. Sample Band A 0101... B 1000... C 0110... AMOVA works on such data to create a distance matrix between samples in order to measure the genetic structure of a population. In statistical terms, AMOVA is a testing procedure based on permutational analysis and involves few assumptions. 3, record 30, English, - analysis%20of%20molecular%20variance

Short tandem repeat polymorphisms, also referred to as variable number of tandem repeats(VNTRs), are very important to scientists, because they can be used to identify individuals genetically. Marker systems are used to detect loci that respond to restriction enzyme cleavage by producing a fragment that can have many different lengths. This polymorphism is due to variation in the number of tandem repeats. VNTRs can be identified in various ways. Probes can be developed which will hybridize to complementary sequences after RFLP has been performed on a sample of genomic DNA(Southern blots). A second method involves the use of PCR. If the sequence surrounding the VNTR is known, PCR primers(oligonucleotides) can be designed to amplify the repeat region(s). The information obtained from these experiments is useful in the fields of forensics, population characterization, human gene mapping, identification of genes involved in disease, relationship testing, and identifying genes of interest such as those that encode proteins containing zinc finge. 3, record 46, English, - variable%20number%20of%20tandem%20repeats

2, record 46, French, - nombre%20variable%20de%20r%C3%A9p%C3%A9titions%20en%20tandem

... in the past (and to some extent in the present), it was fashionable to divide the subject matter of statistics into two distinct subjects called descriptive statistics and statistical inference. In the former, the main emphasis is placed on arithmetic and graphical distillation of data to help describe the existing situation. Statistical inference, on the other hand, involves considerably more sophisticated notions concerned with general decision making and prediction. Not only is the mathematics involved often more difficult, but, as an example of an inductive science (inducting from the particular to the general), it contains subtleties and nuances that are not always revealed by a mathematical formula. 6, record 56, English, - statistical%20inference
