CONT

Petuntse. The gallicized form of the Chinese pai-tun-tzu, first employed by Jesuit missionaries in the 18th century to describe the rock which forms an essential part of true porcelain manufacture. It is a silicate of potassium and aluminium, normally referred to as a feldspathic rock. It was first used, about the 3rd century BC, in China for glazing protoporcelain and later, about the 9th century AD, was mixed with kaolin(white china clay) to form the body of the first translucent porcelain. Petuntse is a fusible rock which, fired at a sufficiently high temperature, becomes a natural glass, like obsidian. It gives porcelain both its hardness and translucency.

OBS

Sometimes termed "Cornish stone" or "china stone" in England.

The process of shaping ceramic objects by pressing soft clay into moulds (or pitchers) made from a hand-modelled prototype.

OBS

As objects made in moulds were often of several parts, the separate parts were joined by a repairer to make the whole by luting.

Clay may be moulded in a number of ways, the process offering obvious advantages in series production. [Porcelain figures were formed by moulding individual sections and joining them together. ]

A machine with a revolving mould used in the making of plates and other flatware in conjunction with a profile which is borne down on the bat of clay, pressing it into the mould and cutting away excess material. The mould forms the inside of the plate and the profile cuts the outside and the footring. This method of quantity production is an old one, having been used at porcelain factories in the 18th century.

A decorative technique in which a design is defined by added coils or strips of clay, forming enclosed areas, which are filled with glaze ....

CONT

Coloured glazes have been widely used on earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain and have led to the development of special techniques in which patterns were incised, or outlined with clay threads(cloisonné technique), so that differently coloured glazes could be used in the same design without intermingling....

DEF

OBS

Elle fut inventée à Bow en Angleterre.
