  • Food Industries
  • Water Treatment (Water Supply)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
DEF

A technique for removing or concentrating particles including micro-organisms(but not free viruses) from fluids by filtration through a filter of known pore size.

CONT

The major applications of membrane filtration in the juice industry are for clarification and concentration. Several ultrafiltration (UF) systems have been installed to clarify apple juice, and systems are also in place for pears, peaches, cranberries and grapes. Besides the elimination of diatomaceous earth filter aid, membrane clarification typically provides 96% to 98% juice recovery ...

OBS

The technique has various physico-chemical and micro-biological applications, such as the "sterilization" of liquids and gases and the separation of micro-organisms from free viruses for their separate examination and/or quantitative assessment.

OBS

membrane filtration: term and definition standardized by ISO.

DEF

CONT

An isothermal snowpack(or any part of a given snowpack deemed isothermal) is 0°C throughout, has free water at all depths, and contributes to the snowmelt hydrograph of its given basin.... An isothermal snowpack is the result of melt metamorphism... This process is initiated by the introduction of liquid water into the snowpack(either from snowmelt or rainfall), which can be distributed to the full-depth of the snowpack by the propagation of water through pore spaces and along strata within the snow structure...

CONT

In much of British Columbia, we now have an isothermal, weak (0°C, wet) snowpack at some amazing elevations. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

The term "isothermal snowcover" is rarely used in avalanche bulletins.

OBS

isothermal snowpack; isothermal snowcover: terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

Key term(s)
  • isothermal snow-pack
  • isothermal snow pack
  • isothermal snow-cover
  • isothermal snow cover

CONT

CONT

The gel entrapment method involves entrapping of the enzymes within the interstitial spaces of crosslinked water insoluble polymer gels.... The usual method of gel formation is to polymerize acrylamide in an aqueous solution of the soluble enzyme and a crosslinking agent such as N, N-methylenebis(acrylamide). The resulting gel block can be mechanically dispersed into particles of desired size. The broad distribution of pore size of the gel inevitably results in leakage of the entrapped enzyme even after prolonged washing whilst the generation of free radicals in the course of the reaction may affect the activity of the entrapped enzymes.

OBS

See record "entrapment".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
CONT
