POROUS ASPHALT [5 records]

Record 1 2014-06-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction Materials
CONT

Water retention pavements are porous asphalt or concrete based pavements, which have a sub-layer that consists of water retentive materials that absorb moisture and then evaporate it through capillary action when the pavement heats up.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Matériaux de constr. (Voies de circulation)
CONT

Record 2 2012-08-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction Materials
DEF

An asphalt mixture of the gap-graded type designed to have a very high content ... of interconnected voids so as to facilitate the passage of water.

CONT

... an open-graded HMA [hot mix asphalt] mixture is designed to be water permeable. Open-graded mixes use only crushed stone (or gravel) and a small percentage of manufactured sands.

OBS

porous asphalt; draining asphalt : terms and definition proposed by the World Road Association.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Matériaux de constr. (Voies de circulation)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction
  • Airport Runways and Areas
CONT

The surface finish considered most effective from the standpoint of wet friction is grooving in the case of Portland cement concrete and the porous friction course in the case of asphalt.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Construction des voies de circulation
  • Pistes et aires d'aéroport
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Construction Materials
CONT

The project included a study tour to Germany and the Netherlands to evaluate new opportunities of reducing noise at close hand. The results achieved in the Netherlands with low-noise road pavement known as 2-layer self draining porous asphalt are particularly interesting.

  • self-draining

French

  • Matériaux de constr. (Voies de circulation)
DEF

CONT

CONT

The porous friction course consists of an open-graded, bituminous surface course composed of mineral aggregate and bituminous material, mixed in a central mixing plant, and placed on a prepared surface.... This friction course is deliberately designed not only to improve the skid-resistance but to reduce aquaplaning incidence by providing a "honeycomb" material to ensure a quick drainage of water from the pavement surface direct to the underlying impervious asphalt. The porous friction course is able, because of its porosity and durability, to maintain over a long period a constant and relatively high wet friction value.
