Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site commemorates three significant aspects of our history : first, the importance of immigration to Canada, particularly through Quebec City, from the early 19th century until World War I; Second the tragedies of Irish immigrants, especially due to the 1847 typhus epidemic; and finally Grosse Île's role from 1832 to 1937 as a quarantine station for the Port of Quebec, long the main point of arrival for immigrants coming to Canada.

OBS

DEF

The administrative processing associated with foreign merchandise that has landed in [the country] for consumption, warehousing, or other reasons ... [It] involves the submission to customs of documents that identify the owner of the goods, the type and character of the merchandise, value for duty purposes, and other relevant information upon which the customs authorities may rely in deciding whether the merchandise is permitted admission into the [country], which permits or licenses, if any, apply to the importation, and what rate of duty is to be assessed.

CONT

All imports must be entered within five working days of arrival at a U. S. [United States] port of entry, unless an extension of time is permitted by the district or area director of customs. Failure to make entry within the prescribed time period will cause the goods to fall into the condition of "general order" under which the unentered merchandise will be transported into a customs bonded warehouse; the goods will remain there, at the owner's expense, until entry is effected.

CONT

Lighterage clause. It is essential to insert the so-called "lighterage clause" in charter-parties which show as port of discharge : any safe port in a certain range, e. g. Havre-Hamburg range. Such a clause may read as follows :"Should steamer be ordered to discharge at a place where there is not sufficient water to enter the first tide after arrival, without lightening, and be always afloat, laydays to count from twenty-four hours after arrival at a safe anchorage for similar vessels bound for such place, and any lighterage incurred to enable her to reach the place of discharge is to be at the expense and risk of the receivers of cargo...

OBS

In this clause, "lighterage" is given the restrictive meaning of "lightening" (to put cargo in lighters in order to lighten the ship, to reduce its draft), instead of its original meaning (loading and/or unloading of cargo by means of lighters but for shipping purposes). Although to change thus the original meaning of lighterage is, strictly speaking, a misuse, the wording of the clause thus called sufficiently specifies its meaning to avoid any misunderstanding. Writers of charter parties and transport documents have universally adopted "lighterage" as a synonym of "lightening" for the corresponding clauses: consequently, in the particular context of clauses incorporated to the above mentioned documents, its usage is to be considered correct.

OBS

Cette clause est incorporée au texte uniformisé du connaissement lignes régulières, publié en 1978, par The Baltic and International Maritime Conference.

OBS

According to the construction plan of the International Space Station, the Docking Compartment-1 has to be eventually replaced with a much larger Universal Docking Module, UDM. Launched by the Proton rocket, the UDM would provide life-support capabilities for as many as six crewmembers onboard the Russian segment of the ISS. Prior to UDM arrival, the Docking Compartment-1 would be discarded to free the Earth-facing "nadir" port of the Zvezda service module for the UDM.
