A steam trap with a thermally actuated device used to expand and close the discharge port when steam flows through it, and to contract and allow steam condensate to flow through when the temperature of the fluid drops to a predetermined value.

CONT

The discharge from this type of trap is intermittent. Thermostatic traps are used to drain condensate from radiators, convectors, steam heating coils, unit heaters and other similar equipment. ... When a thermostatic trap is used for a heating apparatus at least 2 ft of pipe are provided ahead of the trap to cool the condensate. ... Thermostatic traps are recommended for low pressure systems up to a maximum of 15 psi. When used in medium or high pressure systems, they must be selected for the specific design temperature. The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line.

This system is specific to the McDonnell Douglas Corporation aircraft (DC-9, DC-10).

Both gear-and gerotor-type pumps are used in the lubricating system of the turbine engine.... The Gerotor pump has two moving parts : an inner-toothed element meshing with an outer-toothed element. The inner element has one less tooth than the outer. The missing tooth provides a chamber to move the fluid from the intake to the discharge port. Both elements are mounted eccentrically to one another on the same shaft.

CONT

Pitot pumps are seldom used in gearbox lubrication systems, as it is more common to employ a positive displacement pump such as a gear pump or a gerotor type pump.

Lighterage clause. It is essential to insert the so-called "lighterage clause" in charter-parties which show as port of discharge : any safe port in a certain range, e. g. Havre-Hamburg range. Such a clause may read as follows :"Should steamer be ordered to discharge at a place where there is not sufficient water to enter the first tide after arrival, without lightening, and be always afloat, laydays to count from twenty-four hours after arrival at a safe anchorage for similar vessels bound for such place, and any lighterage incurred to enable her to reach the place of discharge is to be at the expense and risk of the receivers of cargo...

OBS

In this clause, "lighterage" is given the restrictive meaning of "lightening" (to put cargo in lighters in order to lighten the ship, to reduce its draft), instead of its original meaning (loading and/or unloading of cargo by means of lighters but for shipping purposes). Although to change thus the original meaning of lighterage is, strictly speaking, a misuse, the wording of the clause thus called sufficiently specifies its meaning to avoid any misunderstanding. Writers of charter parties and transport documents have universally adopted "lighterage" as a synonym of "lightening" for the corresponding clauses: consequently, in the particular context of clauses incorporated to the above mentioned documents, its usage is to be considered correct.

OBS

Installing an Ionics RCC Zero Liquid Discharge system was ... the needed solution to address the Jacksonville, Florida community’s environmental concerns around building the 250 MW [coal-fired cogeneration] plant. A membrane-based process (RO) was used to preconcentrate the plant’s wastewater, thus minimizing the feed volume to the Ionics RCC Evaporators. The RO product water is returned to the cooling tower for makeup and the RO reject is fed to two Ionics RCC Brine Concentrators which recover the feed as high quality distillate for additional makeup. Subsequently, the evaporator brine is concentrated in a 50 gpm Ionics RCC Crystallizer, producing dry solids for disposal. Total water recovery from the zero liquid discharge system is 98%.

In a skidding turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. After return on the aircraft to straight and level flight, the instrument shows a turn in the direction of the skid. In a normal turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. The precession error is quickly corrected by the erecting mechanism.

CONT

The only really tricky part of the attitude indicator is its erecting mechanism. When power(vacuum) is first applied to the instrument, the mechanism quickly erects the gyro spindle to plumb-vertical in order to align the artificial horizon with the natural horizon. In flight, the erecting mechanism continually compensates the gyro for precession errors in order to keep it aligned throughout the course of a long flight. The design of the erecting mechanism is quite clever. In an air-driven attitude gyro, there are "pendulous vanes" suspended from pivots attached to the lower portion of the sealed gyro housing, one vane for each exhaust port. The vanes are positioned so that, when the gyro is erect, each vane half-covers its associated exhaust port. If the gyro tilts so that its axle is not plumb, the pendulous vanes shift so that one exhaust port is more-than-half-covered and the opposite exhaust port is less-than-half-covered. The resulting imbalance of discharge air exerts a force on the rotor housing at right angles to the direction of tilt, causing the gyro to precess to the erect position. As soon as the gyro is erect, the pendulous vanes return to a balanced condition to remove the precessing force. Pure magic! The erecting mechanism can erect the gyro quite quickly at initial power-up because the gyro doesn’t exhibit much gyroscopic rigidity at low rotor RPMs. Typically, the horizon bar becomes level within the first 10 or 15 seconds, and then its oscillations(caused by precessional nutation of the gyro) are damped out within a minute or so as the rotor comes up-to-speed.

Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. A sample of the fuel is then sent to the laboratory for further testing, especially with respect to the flash point. The system can only remove water and particulates.
