Record 3 2003-07-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Transport of Goods
OBS

Traditionally, shipowners were content to carry the cargo from port to port and they limited their responsibility for the cargo to the time when the goods were on board the ship. Mainly because of containerization, many shipowners have now extended their services to include also carriage over land and even carriage by air. Such a combination of modes of transport qualify vessel operating companies as MTOs [multimodal transport operator]. Usually, they will not own or operate means of transport by road, rail or air, but arrange for these types of transport by sub-contracting with such unimodal carriers. Additionally, they would usually sub-contract inland stevedoring and warehousing services.

Domaine(s)
  • Transport de marchandises
OBS

  • River and Sea Navigation
OBS

One of a number of elements into which a ship's voyage is broken down. Generally, this is from one port of call to the next but may be any convenient sub-division to enable a shipowner or ship operator to evaluate the overall profitability of the ship or voyage. The legs of a voyage are also taken into account when assessing the quantity of bunkers required, since a ship may consume less when in ballast than when loaded.
