PORTAL HYPERTENSION [6 records]

Record 1 2017-12-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Vessels (Medicine)
  • The Esophagus
CONT

Esophageal varices(a complex of longitudinal, tortuous veins at the lower end of the esophagus) enlarge and become edematous as the result of portal hypertension. They are especially susceptible to ulceration and hemorrhage. Varices can rupture as a result of anything that increases the abdominal venous pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or the Valsalva maneuver.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Vaisseaux (Médecine)
  • Oesophage
DEF

Originally described as a primary disease of the spleen associated with splenomegaly and pancytopenia, but later considered secondary to portal hypertension.

French

Domaine(s)

Domaine(s)
  • Foie et voies biliaires

Record 4 2010-09-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Human Diseases - Various
  • Liver and Biliary Ducts
DEF

A cirrhosis in which normal liver lobules are replaced by small regeneration nodules, sometimes containing fat, separated by a fairly regular framework of fine fibrous tissue strands; usually due to chronic alcoholism.

OBS

Can progress to severe impairment of liver functions, portal hypertension with ascites and esophageal varices, and life-threatening complications.

Key term(s)
  • Laennec’s cirrhosis

French

Domaine(s)
  • Maladies humaines diverses
  • Foie et voies biliaires
DEF

Key term(s)
  • cirrhose de Laënnec

Record 5 2006-02-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Liver and Biliary Ducts
DEF

A rare form of biliary cirrhosis of unknown etiology, in which small intrahepatic bile ducts are destroyed while the major intra-and extrahepatic ducts remain patent; it is characterized by chronic cholestasis with pruritus, jaundice, hypercholesterolemia and xanthomas, osteomalacia, and, in the later stages by portal hypertension and liver failure. Almost all patients have circulating antimitochondrial antibodies.

Record 6 1994-06-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Blood
  • Social Problems
  • Digestive Tract
DEF

Abnormally increased blood pressure in the portal venous system, a frequent complication of cirrhosis of the liver.

CONT

Swelling of the liver puts pressure on the blood vessels that pass through it, causing the pressure to build up within the vessels. This condition is known as portal hypertension, and in turn may contribute to a swelling of the blood vessels in the esophagus.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sang
  • Problèmes sociaux
  • Appareil digestif
DEF
